Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

We can only pray. But here in East TN, we have the Corker/Bryant/Hilleary mess. I'm one of the only few Chattanoogans not supporting Corker.

I think that's why lots of us end up on FR anyway, wouldn't you say?

No.

The vast majority of us are here for the politics and/or the news.

We're not looking for some place to put others down in a time of disaster.

hope Shep is getting out of the French quarter.

Not to be an alarmist - but geez should we complain to FOX about this? I mean would they risk his life to report a hurricane?

901 MB is what Camile had with 200mph winds. The only lower was Gilber at 888MB

Have you talked with Sheilah recently?

It's been hours since I've talked to her. She is with my step-father and friends, hunkering down. I was talking to my nincompoop friends on messenger just as the hurricane winds appeared to be crossing extreme south Terrebonne Parish and asked them what was happening. They said "nothing." I told them to hang on for 10 minutes or so because the storm was starting to cross. About 10 minutes later their messenger went dead. I'm thinking, according to the satellite, that power may already be gone in Terrebonne Parish.

The latest storm discussion talks about this as well:

THERE HAVE BEEN SOME MODEST CHANGES IN THE STRUCTURE OF KATRINA OVER
THE LAST SEVERAL HOURS. RECENT MICROWAVE PASSES SHOW THAT AN OUTER
EYEWALL IS IN THE FORMATIVE STAGES...AND THE LATEST IR IMAGES SHOW
A LESS WELL-DEFINED EYEWALL WITH MORE EVIDENCE OF OUTER BANDING.
THE NOAA HURRICANE HUNTERS ALSO REPORTED AN EROSION OF THE EYEWALL
IN THE SOUTHWEST QUADRANT. THESE OBSERVATIONS SUGGEST THAT THERE
COULD BE SOME WEAKENING OF KATRINA PRIOR TO LANDFALL. ALL THIS IS
RELATIVE...HOWEVER...AND KATRINA IS STILL EXPECTED TO BE OF AT
LEAST CATEGORY FOUR INTENSITY WHEN IT REACHES THE COAST. AN EYEWALL
REPLACEMENT AT THIS POINT IS NOT ALL GOOD NEWS...AS THEY ARE
GENERALLY ACCOMPANIED BY A BROADENING OF THE WIND FIELD...SO THAT
EVEN AS KATRINA WEAKENS THERE COULD BE AN INCREASE IN THE AREA THAT
EXPERIENCES MAJOR HURRICANE FORCE WINDS.

"Ususally eyewall replacement cycles will weaken the storm first quite dramatically before it then strengthens to worse than before.

However, this storm just has slowly weakened during the same cycles, but to only a slight degree....and then started to even strengthen during those cycles.

I do not know if it has time to fully go through the cycle and strengthen a lot, but by the time it hits land, it probably will be entering a slow strengthening phase and be about where it is now in intensity."

I wonder if the very warm water will make up for it hitting land soon...since warmer water will strengthen it alone... sucks either way

You think Shep would leave a city full of bars that are still open. Also he loves breaking news and using the FOx News Alert graphic any chance he gets.

assuming , of course, the foundation elements aren't washed away.
200 MPH is waaaay excessive; 120 or 100 I could see as that/those are realistic numbers, 200 is not ...

Storm surge can reach the 2nd story though ...

I have a real problem with you people damning other people.

I damned people ..?

I think you might have misunderstood my post.

My point is that there are a lot of examples of the wrath of G_d in every religion, so if you have "religion" it would really be reasonable to see this in that context.

Unless your religion is just the "feel good" kind where everything is coming up roses.

And I would hate to think that we have gotten to the point where we prohibit religious views.

I was there in 1993 for a bowl game. It was January, and the air conditioning was ON. Didn't matter. People were peeling off clothes inside it was so hot. I can't imagine without AC

"Jesus said that the rain falls on the good and the bad. "

This passage refers to blessings, not punishment. The writer and readers of this passages lived in the desert. Rain was considered a blessing, not a punishment.
