"Fortunately it's moving in overnight so it won't have the heat to continue fueling it."

Unfortunately, the MAIN ingrediant this thing feeds off is warm water; insolation has already ocurred to warm the water ...

Anyone who doesn't like MRE's never had to eat C-rations! ;-)

Amen to that. Just avoid the BBQ MREs...

Unless we see a pressure increase, don't believe the winds reports. I think th elast one at 160 wa sinacuret since there was not a formidable increase in pressure to accompany it.

I agree -- KTs vs. mph. 140 KTs translates to about 161mph, which is consistent.

even worse for those of you in Iowa: Des Moines means: "of the monks".

Trust me. There are no Monks in Des Moines. Actually, it's quite the party town if you know the right people.

I saw his posts, he was yapping about "Is God striking New Orleans for its sins?" Didn't shut up when the mods told him to cool it. He wasn't zapped without warning.

how can a high official like that not have some government or military form of exit. this is nuts.

From what has been reported it seems he refused.

Hang on, Dog Gone! Even if the worst happens, thecoming days will see stories of devine protection and great valor, to temper the heartwrenching devastation. I've seen it with so many hurricanes.

I have not, however, seen a Cat 5 landfall in my lifetime.

Absolutely right. I'll take MRE's anyday of the week

MRE's got a lot better in my time in. In the late 80's they featured such wonderful items and dehydrated pork or beef patties. By the mid-90's, the last time I got to "enjoy" one, they had Chicken Ala King, Spaghetti and Meatballs, and a few other fairly good entries, plus they started throwing in a bottle of tabasco which made anything taste good. :-)

She just asked for prayers.

She was on TV Friday afternoon, telling people to "pray that the winds diminish. She even said "we can make this a good experience."

Yet she says that she didn't know until Saturday?

Jimmy Driftwood wrote it.

Johnny Horton made it #1 in 1959.

Thanks. This thread goes so fast (and that's a totally secondary trivia item), that it took me a while to pay attention, and actually find that answer...

Well, it's dark and raining in NO now. The peak is still some hours away. I am sure they got a good enough start on it and are out of danger. There might not be much to come back to, but you can bet FedGov will cover much of the losses. It's going to be a year to remember for sure.
