Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

We all have acquaintances or relatives living down there. At least with this everybody had a chance and plenty of warning to board it up, grab the wedding pictures, and hightail it out. This will mess up the start of the school year. I would sure not rebuild the place where it is now. Valdez was much smaller, but when they rebuilt, it was in a much less dangerous place. Even if the old city doesn't get whacked, they ought to rebuild someplace else anyway and allow the businesses to move, too. The old city is colorful and everything, but people shouldn't be living there anymore. The Port of New Orleans can stay, but they ought to take another look at that, too,

Just heard on WWL that most people are inside the super dome now. (Doesn't like that way on MSNBC though.)

Are you serious? CNN (which is all I can get up here) reported firearms and alcohol. Okay, I can see that.

But cigarettes???? Oh man... I've never smoked, but this is inhuman.

There will be some REALLY crabby people there tomorrow. And the next day... And the day after that, if these massive flood predictions hold true.

What was it about Des Moines that incurred God's wrath?

The Satanic Green Bean Casserole. Straight from hell's pantry. ;)

I bet the food is MRE's....yummy..

Probably beats having to bar-b-que a swamp rat for survival.

Any engineers want to take on the cumulative reaction on the structure if it is a slow moving storm?

A sustained load is a whole different animal that a single gust. That's as far as I can go. Electrons are my gig.

Hmm. Maybe Jimmy Driftwood made it first! Who knows? Tonight I have the song "Jambalya" on my mind a lot. It seems to suit New Orleans well.

Did you hear Geraldo earier when he called New Orleans "the former Big Easy?"

He has more lines than a phone company.

Been a 4 hr wait at the Superdome due to the security screenings.

15,000 people there now. Lines are dwindling. Buses to the Superdome ended when the curfew began.

360,000 MREs delivered by the National Guard. (per WWL in New Orleans).

It involves the weakening and strengthening of the convection (spin and intensity) of the storm.

News says cars on I-10 are running out of gas from sitting in traffic. Just have to abandon them, further clogging the lanes. Can you imagine hitch hiking and putting your family members into different cars then trying to track them down later?

We were thru there last week and the only area that was not completed was turning off to Jacksonville or going stright to Memphis. and if I remember right it was only going east that was any problem at all. From there to West Memphis was clear as a bell. Made the trip from Memphis to OKC in around seven hours. Record time, and no stress.

I haven't quit, but can go days without-------but I was thinking more about the non-smokers - they are a lot safer with indoor smoking than the hurricane.
