Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

The part where he was reading the stunningly blunt (for a government) bulletin from NOAA or was I ignoring a more dramatic moment of his?

Semi-skilled radar manipulation - Katrina's still headed north-northwest at the moment, the center of the eye (still about 30 miles wide according to radar) is about 185 miles south-southeast (165 degrees) of New Orleans.

If it does turn, it looks like New Orleans will get the left eyewall and a bunch of water from Lake Pontchartrain.

I think so too. Wonder if it went like this...

"you want FEMA funds, order the evacuation"

It's absolutely unbelievable imo that they waited so long to do it.

Any guesses as to when OBL, or one of the whacko mullahs, takes credit for causing this?

YOu want trite? Chris Matthews just called the Super dome, "Noah's Ark".

"How are they going to handle it when the bathrooms don't flush because the sewers are flooded", Chris asked Martin Savage. Savage says, "I don't think that's their main concern, Chris."

I get a little nervous when I hear that a gulf oil platform registered winds of 215 mph before the instrumentation failed, then read that the Superdome was designed for 200mph winds.

I hope that figure doesn't include the safety margin.

*****

I don't think to much about the winds hitting the dome and taking it down...its chunks of the surrounding buildings hitting the dome at those speeds...I don't think that was figured into the design. I think its a death trap. But then I would have been on the road and out of there by Friday. The death toll on this monster will leave us all speechless I fear.

This isn't going to be an "overnight flight" for those in the Superdome. If the city floods it will take weeks to pump out the water.

I heard on the news this afternoon that the Superdome had been engineered to withstand a storm of up to 200mph. It should be just fine.

When the big blow is over, when the blame game starts, the Mayor will blame all problems on anyone and everyone but himself and his administration.

And if it weren't for Max Mayfield and the President neither the Mayor nor Governor would probably have issued the evac orders.............I truly hope both are investigated.......what they did (didn't do) borders on the criminal.

I saw Brian Williams and was wondering if they were looking to get rid of him and find someone else...was very surprised to see him down there...maybe he was bored with the 'boring' stuff? Very odd!
