Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.
Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

I hope Shep will be able to get to the roof, or at least someplace higher. From what I remember, there are taller buildings there, but it sounds like the one he's in will be underwater before this is over.

The mayor (I think) of NO was just asked on wwl tv if the price for a barrow of oil would go to $70.00
His reply was that "I think it will go higher than that"
Nagin: superdome open as last resort; 25-30,000 there; still nervous, not opening up other shelters; next phase 6 PM curfew---this will be last pick-up; curfew means lockdown no police, fire, ems services, except some police; will be pounded 14 hours; expect devestation, collapsed buildings,national guard, lots of boats in streets, most buildings expect to survive 165 mph, few 200 mpn, very naive to not expect casualties, so much water will topple levees; parts of city may be uninhabitable for a while; two weeks to drain city, pumps inoperable when submerged, max output of pumps 1 to 1.5 inches per hour; electricity maybe 6 weeks to get back, maybe a whole lot quicker for water;not really concerned about toxic water--pumps to be flushed just before storm; "its gonna be a mess;" white house called Pres ready to move in and help; pipelines if shut will cause big jump in oil prices to over $70; "God bless us;" people calm, no violence; people need axes to bust through roofs to avoid flooding;need to be above 2nd floor.

I'm concerned about Shep. Bourbon Street is not the place to be to ride out this storm - even in a 7th story hotel room. Prayers up for Shep and his fellow media guys.

I hope the Superdome is built better than the World Trade Centers.
Why are people going into a single structure is beyond me . Is it the highest elevation around?

I think that part is hype. Having been in and around chemical plants on the Gulf Coast for years - they are prepared better than most for this scenario.

Beautiful picture. I was on a balcony on Bourbon Street about 2 months ago, throwing Mardi Gras beads to the crowd below. It was so much (clean) fun. At one point I looked down Bourbon at the sea of people moving up and down the street as far as the eye could see, with those historic buildings on both sides. It was such a sight... How little did I know that that might be the last time I'd ever see that view. Makes me start crying all over again.
They just got it completed. Many dunes had just completed being replentished, HWY98 was just repaired.
As of this afternoon, dunes are gone again, boardwalks already getting beaten, Holiday Isle and HWY 98 washing over.
All I can say is that it could've been much worse had the storm taken the track they were showing Friday morning
Does anyone know about the buoy's out from N.O. in the Gulf? Last night they were talking on Fox News or the National Hurricane Center about waves at 30 feet. Do we know about the buoy's today right now closer in to N.O.?
