Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

New Orleans NWS Hurricane Local Statements are here: http://www.srh.noaa.gov/lix/cgi-bin/previous2.php?pil=LIXHLSLIX&version=0. I haven't found one as dire as the one posted, but they are pretty grim as is.

If they're in Baton Rouge then they're near the river.

Wow.....

"MOST OF THE AREA WILL BE UNINHABITABLE FOR WEEKS...PERHAPS LONGER. AT
LEAST ONE HALF OF WELL CONSTRUCTED HOMES WILL HAVE ROOF AND WALL
FAILURE. ALL GABLED ROOFS WILL FAIL...LEAVING THOSE HOMES SEVERELY
DAMAGED OR DESTROYED.

THE MAJORITY OF INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS WILL BECOME NON FUNCTIONAL.
PARTIAL TO COMPLETE WALL AND ROOF FAILURE IS EXPECTED. ALL WOOD
FRAMED LOW RISING APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL BE DESTROYED. CONCRETE
BLOCK LOW RISE APARTMENTS WILL SUSTAIN MAJOR DAMAGE...INCLUDING SOME
WALL AND ROOF FAILURE."

A bit of other bad news you might want to consider. While the levees are designed to keep water out, they also act to keep water in when they are breeched and remain intact. Big problem that hasn't been addressed from an enginneering standpoint. The surge can not recede, the pumps are not designed to work 30 feet under water and the debris and various lifeforms and casualties are all trapped in the bowl. What a nightmare.

That thing looks to me like it is still moving somewhat WNW. It does not look like it's going north yet.

They usually turn north when they get closer to landfall but this one has proved to be unpredictable in the past, so who knows?

Granted that's a concern, but not much radition is kicked off a 10 kiloton (Hiroshima size) device passed 10 to 20 miles, and these devices would be detonated high in the upper atmosphere...not on the ground where particulate matter could be kicked up into the atmosphere. An action the govenment under took in the fifties.

Still, my thoughts were the blast wave could disperse the cohesion of a hurricane's spiral, which supposedly gives it its foce as a storm...whether superheating the atmosphere would disperse the storm as well, it was thought...but, probably, it's like throwing pebbles in a lake...nothing but small ripples.

Helpless we are to nature, sux.

Wrong, the Superdome has for years been considered a shelter of last resort in emergency plans.

They will all be shut down by the companies where they are deemed to be vunerable to damage. That way they can be back up and running within a reasonable time assuming they don't have major damage. The key is not to have them online when damage could occur and thus cause even greater damage/disruption.

According to WWL, there were also questions about whether the NO mayor could legally order a mandatory evacuation. By all means, let's consult the lawyers while Rome burns.

The Jefferson County head honcho had an even better line when asked why he hadn't ordered a mandatory: he doesn't have the staff to drag people from their houses. We've been through a whole lot of mandatories in Florida, and I don't seem to remember any dragging -- a lot of warning and nagging, but no dragging....
