Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.
Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

I was annoyed, too. It was jarring and out of place, considering how many people are likely about to die and how much history is about to be lost forever.
There is no such statement on the NOAA site from NO. We cannot allow forgeries here. We are better than Dan Rather.

Don its real see post 442..
See my #420.
I'm not dialed in yet and do not have a link to that statement.
However, the language is consistent with my expectations of what 175 mph winds are capable of. Amdrew took down reinforced concrete at only 165 mph.
Not secured? Rhetorical question: WHY THE EFF NOT?!
I've been name gathering since the beginning of Katrina
You are more than welcomed to it Paula! :-)
From your keyboard to God's. This is a wonderful city filled with wonderful people. May God help them.
Without in anyway appearing to make light of the tragic loss of life and poroperty that is unfolding. I woder what the over/under is on the number of TV newsmen and camera crews who dont' survive the storm, beuase of stupidity in staying where they shouldn't?

Thank you for some much needed levity. Needless to say, I agree with your comments 100%.
There have already been numerous links to it. Look around.
A hurricane is relatively thin. This one is probably 500 miles or more in diameter, but it is less than 10 miles thick. Most of it is in the first 5 miles of the atmosphere. It is shaped roughly like a CD.
The people were told to bring their own supplies with them to the Superdome.
Louisiana is governed by the Napoleonic Code -- obviously the French are in charge.
Make that days. We are in SWFL and the storm surge is still about 3 foot. Since we are low around the area, that is worrisome. No tides for 2 days. So far no real problems, but we know shes still there.
When Katrina ran over us is was a pup compared to now. Our winds peaked at officially 77 mph, although I doubt we were over 60 at the house. The eye center went by about 40 miles away.
Now it's a monster storm.
The problem is the bowl being on Lake Pontchatrain. Having a bowl at the end of a water funnel is what makes it so dangerous. Of course, the wind speeds are another matter. The suggestion that high rises might collapse is just mind boggling.
If you have no where else to go and no way to get there even if you did, a big domed stadium with few windows and some concessions might give you a glimmer of hope. If I had a choice between a stick-built shotgun home and the Superdome, I'd be at the Superdome, too.
Thanks....keep that list for us...we are going to need it.
