Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

If I remeber right, the frame on that building in FW was twisted and it ultimately had to be torn down.

Nope, the one you're thinking of was in Lubbock.

TWC just said that the eye is 38 miles in diameter.

The eye appears to be due south of the mouth of the Mississippi. Even if Katrina made an immediate turn north, New Orleans is going to get the left side of the eyewall.

Latest radar as of 1630 still shows NW movement...hasn't taken the northward turn yet. On the WC, Cantore amazed by the number of people still on the roads...says they are reacting too late.

Bastardi saying his prediction is 30 miles east of New Orleans for landfall. So if the choice is 30 miles to the east with 100MPH winds with the flooding from the lake, or a dead on hit, which is better?

Slightly east would be worse than a center-hit, as it will push in lots more water. But from the size of it, it's like asking "do you want the grenade to go off in your lap, or just to the right of your chair?"

Either way, I'm not sure if we have enough body bags

the factors which normally steer hurricanes will not be as effective with this storm

The storm is not a physical object like a billiard ball. It is only air at a lower pressure than surrounding air. Air does not carry much momentum, but flows according to the pressures upon it. That is, the hurricane could stop in its tracks and yet keep whirling while the inner and outer pressures are equalized.

Biloxi. He's really concerned about the late start in evacuating. He's at the Miss Coast Coliseum.

I hope so too, although he's not one of my favorite people on Fox. He thinks he's God's gift to women.

He's fun to watch though. Part of that is because he's so overbearing. He has more style and timing than most. But maybe in this case, bad timing.

The big question is 'Where's Jim Cantore?'

Biloxi, and he's no longer on the beach. He's headed into the Biloxi Coliseum as the storm gets closer.

I remember. I was born in Biloxi and I had relatives in Gulfport at the time. I was visiting my great grandmother and great grandfather as well as my grandmother in Collins Miss. in July of 1969. We watched the landing on the moon. My great grandparents who were born in the 1890's were in awe. I was 17 at the time and thought how wonderful I felt that they were able to see a man land on the moon. (I look back on that day and realize that maybe that had a lot to do with why I became a science teacher). I left there for home in N.C. on a bus in Aug. of 1969. I had been down to Gulfport where my Aunts lived. It was a beautiful area. Shortly after I arrived home Camille hit. My Aunts who lived in Gulfport, 4 streets back from the beach were hit hard. Most of the houses in the first 2 rows were destroyed. I visited again in 1971 and they had tales of fools who would not leave, hurricane parties. People did not take it seriously. I hope the gulf shore folks take this one seriously and move to higher ground.

Fox can't get him outta there?

He wouldn't leave now even if it was simply a matter of clicking his ruby red slippers 3 times and saying I wish I was home to get him out of there.

He's thinking Pulitzer.
