Able Danger: Trouble In River City [IMPORTANT]
Captains Quarters [blog] ^ | 8/27/05 | Edward Morrissey

What the team leader found that Sunday morning was nothing less than a complete documented record of operational ties between Iran and al-Qaeda for the critical months just prior to September 11. "The documents showed Iran was facilitating the travel of al-Qaeda operatives, ordering Iranian border inspectors not to put telltale stamps on their passports, thus keeping their travel documents clean," the team leader told me. "The Iranians were fully aware that they were helping operatives who were part of an organization preparing attacks against the United States." ... Most troubling among the seventy-five documents the team read that Sunday morning in July were masses of reports on Iranian intelligence operative Imad Mugniyeh, who is described in the 9/11 Commission Report as "a senior Hezbollah operative." The raw reporting showed that well before 9/11, the United States had hard intelligence that the Tehran regime had appointed Mugniyeh as the point man for operational contacts with Bin Laden's men. That coincided with the information Zakeri brought to the CIA in Baku four months before the attack. ....

In fact, not much of this material makes it into the report at all. Mugniyeh didn't make the cut, despite evidence that he facilitated more than half of the muscle hijackers' entry during the late spring of 2001 into the United States for their 9/11 attacks. This, the CIA rationalized, only proved that the hijackers traveled through Iran, and not to Iran. However, that still leaves an open question about why their passports did not reflect those visits -- a question that the Commission never bothers to bring up, let alone answer.

"Nevertheless, despite all of this, we actually find ourselves at war with IRAN. Undeclared as of yet,...."

- If you consider what must be covert Special Forces observations, incursions and perhaps even actions against terrorists infiltrating Iraq along the Iranian border, you're probably right.
However, I think that direct military action against Iran will be undertaken by Israel, who will launch a surprise attack to take out Iran's nuclear bomb making capability sometime in the next year or two. The US have sufficient forces in place in Iraq and would be begging Iran to try something in retaliation so that they could be invaded.
With Iran's nuclear ambitions thwarted, they would no longer be a threat to the US and they can be left to fester in peace - until the people there rise up against the mullahs who run the regime.

I would suspect because we are not yet ready to confront Iran openly. But the fact that the Able Danger folks are stepping forward may indicate we're getting closer to it.

"Sounds like there may be far more coming on the subject of 'major omissions' in the report of the 911 Omission Commission. fwiw, I have long thought it quite possible that Al Qaeda had useful assistance from BOTH Iran and Iraq."

The sheet has hit the fan. Thanks for post. Will bookmark. Weldon cracked a main valve to the dam, that controls how much water can pass. Heaven only knows how many towns down stream are going to get wiped out if the valve cannot be repaired.

There was obviously large-scale bureaucratic CYA on the part of the FBI and the CIA regarding the run-up to 9/11. Both these agencies have demonstrated incompetence and are in need of reform. The American public needs to know the truth about this incompetence and about the roles of Iraq and Iran in assisting Al Qaeda. There is no way intelligent decisions about future actions can be made unless this information is disseminated to the public.

"We share with country with a bunch of self centered ignorant people who only believe what they hear on the MSM because they are too lazy to find out the truth."

I think we share the country with a bunch of self centered ignorant people who prefer to believe lies.

I wish this was true, but honestly. I wish I had the time to put this together in a post. Over the period of this War in Iraq, we have been sparring in the shadows with Iran at every turn. The game being played is very serious and the goals of the Iranians is nothing less than victory. The Iranian government was toppled in a quiet coups called the previous election and replaced with a Dictatorship run by the extreme paramilitaries that once served the Mullah's and now is in firm control of the country. Now, we have evil that is every bit as frightening in control of Iran and actively pursuing the goal of global domination, via Jihad rather than direct military force of arms. And, the US is facing this by fronting liberty and freedom as a real and present alternative to terror and tyranny.

I think of Islamic terrorism as a team effort.

Its a team with many players, coaches, managers, assistants, and some ball boys and groundskeepers. The associations vary form day to day...sometimes a strong alliance..sometimes a more loosely knit coalition. Some of that has to do with the cultural aspect of the players...but thats another story.

It has sponsors...mainly at the state level, and some individuals as well. Some are hidden, silent enablers of it.

We know that Iraq was...and Iran certainly is NOW...a state sponsor of terrorism.

The fact that a most wanted terrorist such as Mugniyeh has been hiding out in Iran for some time is not surprising. Sometimes you have people who do the R&D planning, and grunts who eventually carry out the details.
