Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

He just said storm surges of 20 feet, and then said the word levees. Actually on the coast I have heard they will be higher.

XTRP is simply a straight line extrapolation of the storm's motion Perhaps I should add that explanation at the top of the next thread. Seems someone asks about it every time the model is posted.

I found the chemical plants much more interesting than the antebellum mansions driving up the river. Those chemical plants are erector set monsters.

Have you ever driven the River Road at night when they are lit up?

You think that roof could hold off Cat 4 or 5 winds?

On another NO TV station, the mayor said he expected tonight to be "a quiet night". Is this guy brain-dead?

The Great Galveston Hurricane was a Category 4 with about 145mph winds.

Oh my word. The IR satellite image of Katrina doesn' look so big. Should be interesting to get a look at the visible during daylight. Looks like another name retired.

It was 1900, not 1906. :)

The estimate was category 4. What killed all those people was the storm surge. Galveston is just an island. The gulf just swept right over it like it wasn't there.

Would there be any scientific reason why a hurricane might be more drawn to a geographical place like NO?

(Ready to be snickered at...)

No, but that sounds like a great idea next time, if there is a next time. They were awesome enough during the day. They mesmerized me with their grandeur. I found them in a way great architectural statements.

Camille went in very tight and the center of destruction was not as large as most hurricanes. They mentioned that a lot in the days that followed the storm.

That picture you linked to was to the storm before it tightened up into a Category 5...when it hit it was much tighter. I remember watching TV coverage of the damage to hwy 90, and the areas that got scoured, but it wasn't a very big center of peak danage....

Why not? It's held off Tom Benson so far.
