What catagory storm do they think the 1906 Galveston hurricane was? wiped out the island..killed 6000= people..
still the worst weather disaster in the USA? just wondered

The Great Galveston Hurricane was a Category 4 with about 145mph winds.

It was 1900, not 1906. :)

The estimate was category 4. What killed all those people was the storm surge. Galveston is just an island. The gulf just swept right over it like it wasn't there.

That was 1900...that was in the days when all deaths were reported. We live in a different day...and deaths are known to be underreported...
