Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

jb,
They're finally getting around to telling us they're closing the schools tomorrow here in Lafayette. If you haven't heard, check out Ch. 4 (KATC?)

(Please consider joining me in a POWERFUL prayer...)
The Prayer or Blessing Against Storms

Jesus Christ the King of Glory has come in Peace.
God became man,
and the Word was made Flesh.
Christ was born of a Virgin.
Christ suffered.
Christ was crucified.
Christ died.
Christ rose from the dead.
Christ ascended into Heaven.
Christ conquers.
Christ reigns.
Christ orders.
May Christ protect us from all storms and lightning.
Christ went through their midst in Peace,
and the Word was made Flesh.
Christ is with us with Mary.
Flee you enemy spirits because the Lion of the Generation of Juda, the Root David has won.
Holy God!
Holy Powerful God!
Holy Immortal God!
Have Mercy on us.
Amen!

I always envision heading east, then 45º angle away from the storm path. Have family in Stuart, so that is an option. In reality, always make hotel res for Brandon...

Is it prayer and hoping the POTUS calls and orders them to evacuate?

You would think POTUS declaring a federal state of emergency for LA YESTERDAY would have given them a bit of hint??????????

I have a question. What is the likely hood or is there even any of a storm of this magnitude slamming into land and effecting the New Madrid Fault? Will the flooding that is sure to come right up thru where the fault lies have any effect. The New Madrid has been showing recent signs of more activity. This hurricane scares me to death but I can not quit thinking about the fault line....!!! as if this monster of a storm is not bad enough.

There comes a point when a citizenry has to become informed and stop depending on the government to tell them when to eat, sleep, bathe or flee for their lives.

Any possibility of a FR collection drive

Nope. Been asked before. For good reasons, it would not be something this board is capable of. There will be plenty of places to give to.

"People were hosting parties, had no idea how dangerous the storm was. Reports of people riding mattresses out of 3rd floor windows, never to be seen again. It is just so hard to comprehend, the strength of nature."

Amazing isn't it. You'd think after witnessing what that latest tsunami did people could get their act together. Sadly some people are ate up with stupid. I have some relatives who think "everything" is a huge PAR-TAY. I don't bother wasting my time and energy on them any longer. They drag anyone close enough down with them, Darwinism, etc.

"[ The mayor ] exempted hotels from the evacuation order because airlines have already cancelled all flights."

That segment Fox did with the couple who said they are going to ride out the storm on the 4th floor.

I pray that is not the last video they ever have of that couple.

Well, from what I've read, the pumps are the highest priority and have been upgraded in recent years. However, if the levees are overtopped and the bowl fills, the pumps will go down. Appears that might also happen if a breach fills the bowl. Looking at maps on the Army Corp of Engineers' website, they show the levee heights to be 11' on the west, rising to 17' at the northwest corner on the lake, then varying between 18' and 13' all along the north and east. Am guessing the variance is from subsidence? Similar numbers to the south, but because of the complex of levees protecting the south shore communities, perhaps that would blunt the wave action and some of the direct surge from a south approach? Just speculation on my part, and I have no idea how high the storm surge would be on the city's north shore from topside winds coming from the north as the eye passed to the east. Would think it would be lower than the predicted direct surge, which is pushed not only by the winds but also the storm's momentum, but the flip side is how much would the piling up of all that water in the small area of the lake exacerbate the wind driven surge? I have no idea, and haven't read any predictions on that, other than the simple conclusion that if the levee is 13', 14' of surge will overtop it.

There was a caller into 870 AM...her brother in law is in a nursing center behind the Jefferson Hospital(ground floor). Only one nurse was left to take care of all the patients. This caller had 2 family members going over to help feed and care for the patients. Heartbreaking!

The mayor & govenor need to be charged with negligent homicide for having ZERO disaster preparations for these poor souls. I hope this radio station keeps announcing this horrific news!

I didn't know that. Probably more homes have been built to that code in Miami/Dade than have been built in New Orleans. But I didn't even know it was possible to think a home could be built to withstand a Cat. 4 hurricane.

Yeah, my thought exactly. When he mentioned the boats, I wondered if he'd ever seen pictures of all the boats after a Florida hurricane. Maybe they have them in dry dock, but will the dock be dry after the storm, LOL!

The Red Cross lost a great deal of support and confidence when they charged the soldiers of WWII for coffee and donuts--while eliciting donations from the soldiers' families back home.

Bush called Blanco to ask her to order a manadatory evacuation, Blanco said. Whether she did order it I don't know. That radio news clip didn't bother to mention that. I just got up. I don't know why they don't have fleets of buses and send passenger and freight trains in to drive folks who don't have cars up to Alexandria. It seems rather obvious to me. NO may very well end up a death pit.

Typical tourists. A real vet would buy wine as you don't have to have ice to keep it chilled.
