Are Men the New Women?
By Debbie Schlussel
Earlier I wrote about women wanting to call football games--trying to be like men. But today, there are also two news items about men trying to be more like women:
* USA Today has a piece on men and waxing. Eeeuw.
Key Quote of the article: "Waxing makes up 35% to 40% of the business at Joq Day Spa for Men in Atlanta. 'Men are just becoming a lot more conscious of what their body looks like,' spa director Christopher Keever says."
First of all, there shouldn't be a "day spa" for men. Second, anything called the "Joq Day Spa for Men" is only for men whose favorite song is by "The Weathergirls." FYI, "jock" is spelled J-O-C-K, not with a Q. Anyplace that uses a Q, well, again, "The Weathergirls."
* The Detroit Free Press Business Page features this front-pager: "Generation Y Spending Trends: Manicured Men."
The print version of this article has a giant photo of someone named Guido Amato getting a facial. No-one named Guido Amato should be getting a facial. Incidentally, the "men's salon" (isn't "men's salon" an oxymoron?) where he gets his facials is called "Wise Guys." Amato admits he's been called a metrosexual. "When I hear that word, I just think, 'a guy that likes to take care of himself.'" No, Guido, that's NOT what it means.
Highlights, waxed brows, manicure, pedicure. These are the many women's products guys like Guido are now using. Sad.
It's not like there's a fine line between brute and metrosexual. There isn't. These emasculating grooming habits are definitely a turn-off. Unless you live in South Beach.
Sometimes I think I might have compiled a large enough enemies list to warrant another switch. ;)
"Metrosexuals"????
Where I come from we've always called them "sissys"

I agree! Hairy backs are a turn off for me. And the Unibrow? Who says:
"Oh! gosh look he's got one great BIG eyebrow!"
There is a difference between basic grooming and being a
vane peacock.
You got it perfectly right, unfortunately some of our more hairier friends think that a trimmed back is the same thing as castration, where the hair follicle is directly connected to a man's sense of identity ;)
If one is swimming, perhaps a shirt is not necessary. But at other times, most men (and woment) would do better to cover up. A loose cotton shirt (yes, even one with long sleeves) is cool and keeps the sun off the skin.
It is not just a question of modesty (although there is that). Most people simply look better fully clothed. Although there are exceptions, the vast majority of Americans do not have bodies that look good half naked.
One more thing. Although I do not live in Florida, I do live in the desert Southwest, where the weather can get very hot. The people who tell me that they absolutely must wear shorts and tanktops to be cool are the same people who spend almost all of their time indoors in air-conditioned comfort. Just about the only time they are exposed to the heat is when they walk between the front door and their cars.
Agree,
A guy can still be masculine, macho and totally alpha...
While being pleasant to touch, look at and smell. :)
(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)
Well, it's pretty clear what the "Q" in "Joq" stands for.
Yes--I remember "Son of Liberty" (I'm a RevWar nut) but not your later name. We all make enemies here on occasion...as long as you don't find someone waiting for you at your house to "continue the discussion," it's no problem. LOL!
Can't remember her screen name but she's not "Deb"
BURMA-SHAVE
Leni
Um...No thanks!
I thought that the "Deb" that stopped posting here a few years ago was she. If you have the true facts, then I defer to you.
I'll just say I wouldn't want to tangle with the real "Deb".
Schlussel's screen name is on the tip of my tongue but I'll never remember it.
LOL. . .but whoever has the task of making-up Algore; he was a one-man horror show;
. . . except when he was with Tipper; and then it was a 'two-man' horror experience.
Have not seen even a picture of her since Algore officially. . .supremely, lost to GW.
Women will go out with men like this. They will just cheat on them with guys like us. :)
Gee, and in Brooklyn, I was considered a p-ssy by some...
lol
