Are Men The New Women? (Debbie Schlussel On Real Women Being Turned Off By Girly Men Alert)

Are Men the New Women?

By Debbie Schlussel

Earlier I wrote about women wanting to call football games--trying to be like men. But today, there are also two news items about men trying to be more like women:

* USA Today has a piece on men and waxing. Eeeuw.

Key Quote of the article: "Waxing makes up 35% to 40% of the business at Joq Day Spa for Men in Atlanta. 'Men are just becoming a lot more conscious of what their body looks like,' spa director Christopher Keever says."

First of all, there shouldn't be a "day spa" for men. Second, anything called the "Joq Day Spa for Men" is only for men whose favorite song is by "The Weathergirls." FYI, "jock" is spelled J-O-C-K, not with a Q. Anyplace that uses a Q, well, again, "The Weathergirls."

* The Detroit Free Press Business Page features this front-pager: "Generation Y Spending Trends: Manicured Men."

The print version of this article has a giant photo of someone named Guido Amato getting a facial. No-one named Guido Amato should be getting a facial. Incidentally, the "men's salon" (isn't "men's salon" an oxymoron?) where he gets his facials is called "Wise Guys." Amato admits he's been called a metrosexual. "When I hear that word, I just think, 'a guy that likes to take care of himself.'" No, Guido, that's NOT what it means.

Highlights, waxed brows, manicure, pedicure. These are the many women's products guys like Guido are now using. Sad.

It's not like there's a fine line between brute and metrosexual. There isn't. These emasculating grooming habits are definitely a turn-off. Unless you live in South Beach.

Though they may pine publicly for Alan Alda, most women yearn to marry cads. Especially jovial ones. And make babies with them. This I know.

And that's all I'm going to say about that.

Let's return to first principles: there is only one reason why men do anything and that's for chicks.

Without the gentle motivation of chicks, the world would be an idyllic realm of scratching, farting, non-shaving, non-tie wearing, football watching, cold cut eating slice of paradise.

I'd suggest that the 'men' who get waxed at Joq Day Spa are doing it for their boyfriends rather than to get chicks.

Hogwash.

I had to endure that pablum during lawschool when they discussed the civilizing effects of women. Balloney.

A looser pathetic nough to think supporting women's sufferage so he could get laid by susan b anthony DESERVES to be celebate involuntarily.

Nothing would change, other than there would be far fewer fuzzy toilet seat covers. Men would still have had the singularity of mind and purpose.

(/flashback rant off)

pssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssswwrt, ahhhh.

They're doing it for a certain type of chick. I've actually encounter them from time to time. The phrase they use (often) to describe one of these guys is, "He really takes care of himself." The body wax, manicures, etc. are part of a package that includes four or five trips a week to the gym, teeth cleaning every four months, etc. etc.

The best way to describe it is that their bodies have become their hobbies.

It was a joke. Yes, men would still compete. But they wouldn't wear neck ties, of that I'm dead certain.

Uh, let's see, I can spend 60 bucks to put this strip of silk that serves no function around my neck that I'll knot in an elaborate manner or buy a couple rounds of drinks for my friends?

I can't stand listening to women call any sports...it just doesn't sound right. Now on the other hand, I absolutely LOVE watching football and screaming at the TV with the guys. Haven't met a guy yet that didn't think that was cool...but I've been a sports nut since I was a little girl. Maybe it's only cool since I actually know what I'm talking about and not just trying to fit in...

The ones that I know that indulge in that kind of nonsense aren't whipped. They don't stick around long enough.

Sorry, but I still don't find it convincing your argument for having an unibrow is about retaining one's masculinity and not falling onto the..metrosexual trap. There are extreme on both sides of the territory and I find it that the answer is somewhere in the middle.

"Unless you're a chick, some have to shave every OTHER day..."

That only depends on who'll be touching them that day...LOL

That's not what I said. But check out that picture of "Nair for Men" further up the thread; it makes the case pretty convincingly.

Men, you know what I'm talking about....

What? No pictures of this woman?

Image hosted by TinyPic.com

I have to admit, I know next to nothing about her.

Looks hot. Who is she? Is she as brilliant and as quick-witted as Ann Coulter?

Bump for morning read...
