FEDS VOW TO GET TOUGH ON ILLEGALS Tue Aug 23 2005 17:15:30 ET

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, acknowledging public frustration over illegal immigration, said Tuesday that the federal government's detention and deportation system must be fundamentally restructured.

"We have decided to stand back and take a look at how we address the problem and solve it once and for all," Chertoff said during a breakfast meeting with reporters.

The NEW YORK TIMES is planning a front page placement for the Chertoff comments on Wednesday, newsroom sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

The unusually blunt assessment by the nation's top immigration official comes after governors in New Mexico and Arizona recently declared a border-related "state of emergency," citing a surge in smuggling and violence associated with the steady flow of illegal immigrants.

...Chertoff might just be the catalyst

Perhaps...at present it looks like the SW Dem governors are the catalysts, even if disingenuous. There was no incentive for Bush to move on this until the Dems tried to take advantage of the political opportunity, which they have in past couple weeks. I guess we'll see if both sides are bluffing, as usual.

If they don't do anything, people complain, now that they are starting to address the problem and do something, instead of applauding, that better late than never, you are screaming your head off and criticizing.

Chertoff has only been there a few months. Also, Tom Ridge must have done something right, we didn't have any terrorist attacks on US soil during his tenure, but I guess that doesn't count, just so you can bash the Bush administration, right?

There are predator drones on the border, we need more border agents, more detainee beds which the dems are blocking, we need to build a fence on the whole southern border but the problem is the private land in a lot of areas especially like texas, maybe the govt can designate a few feet from the border federal land buffer zone.

I think what Chertoff is going to do is change the policy of letting illegals go when first caught and asked to appear back at a hearing at a later time and we know they never show. Hopefully the new policy will be to have the hearing while they are still detained then deported. Also hopefully they will be expanding detention centers. I hope they can go around congress for this because Hillary and the dems blocked more detention beds last month.

Hillary will do anything she can to stop Chertoff from cracking down on the borders. Hillary has voted against more border agents, voted against more detainee beds, she voted for amnesty. Hillary railed against the real id act. Hillary and the dems need to be stopped from blocking us on this issue and blocking us on the fence issue that the enviornmental dems like hillary don't want.

Not bashing Bush, just exercising a healthy dose of skepticism and pragmatism.

Tell you what. You be the one to come to Texas and try to take my land because of a failed federal border policy. Good luck, you will need it.

""We have decided to stand back and take a look at how we address the problem and solve it once and for all," Chertoff said during a breakfast meeting with reporters."

Snore... How about enforcing the law in the Fed gov's
immediate vicinity, like Washington D.C., Northen Va.,
and Maryland. That would be a start. When there are vast
round-ups and deportations of these invaders and
a halt to legal immigration the Feds will regain some
credibility in my eyes.

Any landowner who gives any crap about the border fence being put in should have the fence put on the north side of his property.

However, I get the feeling of the Democrats and Republicans starting to yell about how strong they are on the border is about the same as the prefight screaming by pro wrestlers. Even if they do smack each other with folding chairs in the "fight", they'll share the same locker room afterward and laugh about what chumps the audience is. The only thing missing is Vince McMahon.

Liar weasel. The Bush administration does everything it can to make it easier for the illegals to come in. They even called the minute men vigilantes. These comments only are meant to deflect the anger of the public, while stabbing us all in the back.

After a long established history of deliberate indifference to this problem, I'll need more than wind to convince me.

Not me, I'm already convinced. They're going to stand back, take a deep breath and talk about it for a while, maybe form yet another blue ribbon commission to study the problem. Then after five more years of looking into every aspect of the situation and five million more illegals the "bipartisan" members will conclude that an amnesty/guest worker program is the best solution.

Yes, sure Bush is the real enemy according to you, right?

I am sure you would be so happy if Gore or Kerry were president.

"You mean deciding "to stand back and take a look at how we address the problem" along with plans to "solve it once and for all" didn't impress you?"

Allow me to translate this for you:

"El Presidente" Boosh is in a hurry to pass the "Temporary" Guest Worker program before he becomes, but due to 90% of Americans of all political backgrounds being ready to burn down Congress, he will need to "stand back and take a look" at how he can slip amnestia through in the middle of the night.

Does that make more sense? ;)

The Feds will get tough on illegals like the UN deals with terrorists...."Stop!" Or we'll tell you to "Stop!" again...

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, acknowledging public frustration over illegal immigration...

But bayourod keeps telling us that Americans aren't at all concerned about illegal immigration, and that no Americans are negatively affected by illegal immigration. Perhaps bayourod should contact Michael Chertoff and inform him that he's wrong on this subject. And if that doesn't get Chertoff to start seeing things bayourod's way on illegal immigration, bayourod would then probably call Chertoff a racist and an Anti.

Feds propose working with state on border issues

http://www.azdailysun.com/non_sec/nav_includes/story.cfm?storyID=114198

Russ Knocke, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, said Chertoff is more interested in a "comprehensive proposal" to deal with issues of illegal border crossing than solely questions of transportation.

Yeah, sure. Left to its own wishes, the Bush administration will do a slow motion mock immigration enforcement, full of publicity and promises, but with only a small number of highly visible deportations. Since there is no promise or intention to protect the border, we can expect the flow of illegals into the country to be little abated.

Team Bush has barely begun to wake to the political peril that they have opened for themselves and the Republican party. The loss of Congress is possible in 2006 or in 2008, with a loss of the Presidency as well. And a major domestic terrorist incident that implicated the Bush administration's lax border security would likely result in a major and potentially successful impeachment effort.

For the slower students in the class, imagine the effect of several hundred dead Americans, leaving behind grieving relatives camped out in several locations demanding Bush's impeachment for failing to secure the borders. Do you think the media might hype the effort? Or would they even need to for a decisive slice of the Republican electorate to abandon Bush?
