Al-Jazeera, the Arab TV network that brings us exclusive footage of Osama bin Laden, is trying to pretty itself up for an anticipated 2006 U.S. debut.

The network, which is planning a global rollout for its English-language Al-Jazeera International, has hired Josh Rushing, former Marine Lt. and spokesman for Central Command during the Iraq war's early days.

While Rushing's exact role has yet to be announced, his appearance on the network is sure to lend it some credibility.

At the same time, A-JI is hoping to add TV icon Sir David Frost to its lineup.

The moves come as the network is talking to U.S. cable and satellite operators about deals to carry the station.

Obviously YOU think it's important for those of us in the west to know what al-Jazeera is saying.

NO,  NOT FROM al-Jazeera's presentation. al-Jazeera is a Front propaganda tool, thinly disguised English language media outlet for the islamofreaks. They would never broadcast the real Arabic content of their programming.

I favor this approach: The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) explores the Middle East through the region's media. MEMRI bridges the language gap which exists between the West and the Middle East, providing timely translations of Arabic and Farsi media, as well as original analysis of political, ideological, intellectual, social, cultural, and religious trends in the Middle East.

Founded in February 1998 to inform the debate over U.S. policy in the Middle East, MEMRI is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit, 501 (c)3 organization. MEMRI's headquarters is located in Washington, DC with branch offices in Berlin, London, Jerusalem, and Baghdad, and has a project active in Sweden. MEMRI research is translated to English, German, Hebrew, Italian, French, Spanish, and occasionally Turkish and Russian.

I hope you are correct that people will see al Jazeera as what it is-propaganda. However, I am not as sure as you that it will not "last long" because of that. We only have to look at our own media to see how the conservative movement has been lied about and denigrated.

Even with the growth of blogs and the alternative sources info that have been such a help to us, what do we do to reach those who believe what al J. says and counteract the malignancy of radical Islam?

"If you don't want to watch it, don't turn to that channel. Is it going to hurt you to see another point of view?

Even if you view them as "the enemy", it's good strategy to know what your enemy is thinking and saying."

Sometimes I think the average "conservative" has more in common with an ostrich than any other animal."

Well smartguy, if this were WWII types like you would let Josef Goebbels broadcast his Third Reich lies to America. The only ostrich is you with your head up your ass.

You really should watch this rant on al-Jazeera, made by a Member of Parliment and taker of bribe money in the  'UN Oil for Food Program' and a confidant of Thief Arafat.

That was a very interesting set of video clips. I haven't seen it on our MSM.

Fine. They'll just further drain ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN of viewers.

Then they can all go down the drain together.

In all seriousness, that's currently one of our major problems, is it not? If we CAN'T reach those people, and if we CAN'T counteract the radical propaganda, in the end we might as well concede that the terrorists have won, don't you think?

As I see it, our choices are either to win hearts and minds, or to wipe them off the face militarily & hope others don't rise up to take their places - which will be difficult because the military action will make more of them angry.

It seems to me that to win hearts and minds, we have to have some understanding of their point of view - and we have to realize that their culture, and their viewpoint on many things, is very different from ours.

Yes, their viewpoints are very different than ours. The major one I see is that we feel they should have a representitive government and that they feel entitled to enslave us. Their religion seems to demand it.

So, I do not see this as an either/or situation. Their culture seems to respect power above anything else. We need to use that as a weapon against them. With enough power shown they will come to respect us. When we try to be understanding they take it as a sign of weakness. It seems to me that the "arab street" only erupts when they see us as weak, not when we were strong and decisive.

Hearts and minds may work with some. The ones who actually are able to reason things out and see how things can be better may be reached that way. But they have never been taught to do that and as you say...comon sense is not common. Some others may be reached by use of power. We can only hope it is enough.

You're correct, but they also are very good at using our desire to be humane and understanding against us - and that is something many Americans do not understand.

Ah yes, Al Jazeera, the shining example of tolerance and balance, right?
And how about Air America, do you send money to them?
No?
Then why should we pay for Al Jazeera with our CABLE BILLS?

Is your cable system adding Al Jazeera? Is your bill increasing as a result?

"Is your cable system adding Al Jazeera?"

Uhh.. what is this thread about?
If you don't know that, then why are you here?

"Is your bill increasing as a result?"

Your cable bill pays for the programming.
Al Jazeera supports aids and abets terrorism.
Tell me WHY on Earth MY money should go to support people who want me dead.
