In all seriousness, that's currently one of our major problems, is it not? If we CAN'T reach those people, and if we CAN'T counteract the radical propaganda, in the end we might as well concede that the terrorists have won, don't you think?
As I see it, our choices are either to win hearts and minds, or to wipe them off the face militarily & hope others don't rise up to take their places - which will be difficult because the military action will make more of them angry.
It seems to me that to win hearts and minds, we have to have some understanding of their point of view - and we have to realize that their culture, and their viewpoint on many things, is very different from ours.
Yes, their viewpoints are very different than ours. The major one I see is that we feel they should have a representitive government and that they feel entitled to enslave us. Their religion seems to demand it.
So, I do not see this as an either/or situation. Their culture seems to respect power above anything else. We need to use that as a weapon against them. With enough power shown they will come to respect us. When we try to be understanding they take it as a sign of weakness. It seems to me that the "arab street" only erupts when they see us as weak, not when we were strong and decisive.
Hearts and minds may work with some. The ones who actually are able to reason things out and see how things can be better may be reached that way. But they have never been taught to do that and as you say...comon sense is not common. Some others may be reached by use of power. We can only hope it is enough.
