Children Who Eat Fries Have Higher Cancer Risk

Very young children who eat French fries frequently have a much higher risk of breast cancer as adults, U.S. researchers reported Wednesday.

A study of American nurses found that one additional serving of fries per week at ages three to five increased breast cancer risk by 27 percent.

"Researchers are finding more evidence that diet early in life could play a role in the development of diseases in women later in life," said Dr. Karin Michels, of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and Harvard Medical School, who led the study.

"This study provides additional evidence that breast cancer may originate during the early phases of a woman's life and that eating habits during that phase may be particularly important to reduce future risk of breast cancer."

For their study, Michels and colleagues used an ongoing survey of female registered nurses. They studied 582 women with breast cancer and 1,569 women free of breast cancer in 1993.

Writing in the International Journal of Cancer, the researchers said they looked at the women's diets and at questionnaires filled out by the mothers of the participants.

One risk factor for breast cancer stood out: women whose mothers who said their daughters ate French fries had a higher risk of breast cancer. This increased 27 percent for each weekly serving reportedly eaten.

"These data have to be interpreted cautiously since the observed association between consumption of French fries and breast cancer is dependent on the validity of the maternal recall of the diet," said Michels.

"Mothers were asked to recall their daughter's preschool diet after the participants' breast cancer status was known and it is possible that mothers of women with breast cancer recalled their daughter's diet differently than mothers of healthy women," she added.

"Other foods perceived as less healthy such as hot dogs or ice cream however, were not associated with breast cancer risk."

A high-fat diet has been linked with breast cancer, which affects more than 200,000 U.S. women a year and is expected to kill 40,000 this year.

I am so totally over this kind of crapola it isn't funny.

WHY in heaven's name are they wasting all this money on "studies" to find blame in consumption choices instead of spending the money on finding cures???????????

Rhetorical question, I know - these studies "make" money (continued grants) cures mean the body part cartel members are out of jobs.

I can barely remember things from when I was 3 to 5 years old. I certainly cannot remember how many servings of fries I ate every week. PS. Do tater tots count? My school seemed to serve them every so often. Can I sue the city/state/county if I get cancer as an adult?

I wonder whether this includes Tater Tots. They were a childhood dietary staple.

Childhood dietary stable? Are you crazy - that's my favorite form of fried potatoes!!!!!!!!

Another hype "scare you" report on tonight's news... "What YOUR children eat at McDonalds could give them cancer! Find out what after sports and weather, tonight at 11".

I found this to be pretty humerous and useless when reported on FNC today. It isn't actually the french fries, it's the oil they are fried in. So I guess fried chicken and fried shrimp can cause cancer too if enough eaten.

Not only that, as an aside the reporter said that this study was based on what mothers could remember feeding their kids 30 yrs ago.

This just in also; Most people that contact breast cancer are women!!

A few years ago, I read about one of the rare male breast cancer victims. He said that he felt very self-conscious going for his treatments, because all of the other patients were women, and they'd always stare at him!

It really is, because there are lots of women who have or had breast cancer and never had fries at that age, I bet, since I remember when McDonalds came into being.

Absolutely possible!

Oven fries:

1 russet potato cut into 1/4-inch sticks
1 tbsp canola oil (olive oil turns bitter)

Soak potatoes in HOT tap water for 10 min. (from America's Test Kitchen).
Dry with paper towels. Mix with oil.

Cook on a wire rack over a cookie sheet at 450 - 475 degrees for as long as they get as done as brown as you want.

Sprinkle with kosher salt and serve HOT.

(I have a small convection oven that gets 'em super crisp).

I am taking a wag at this.

Partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Free radicals/carcinogen stuff.

I don't buy anything with that in it just to be on the safe side. I cook with butter and olive oil and don't bother giving my kids shortening stuff. I buy their crackers in the natural food aisle. They took the transfats out of Pepperidge Farm goldfish.

I know Five Brothers fries their fries in peanut oil.

But to follow up, I'm a little freaked out by those apples they serve with the McDonald's Happy Meals. We left them in the car once for about a week and they were still white and crunchy.

So now I get the fries.

We just go there rarely anymore.

Bunch of BS. Who funded this "study"? Who are these "researchers"? Kids don't get cancer from eating fries, they get a risk of cancer from eating NOTHING BUT JUNK FOOD and sitting on their butts all day playing video games.

How were the fries cooked? Were they fried, baked or broiled?
