Whenever Im on a radio show these days, someone calls in and demands to know whether my children are in Iraq. Well, not right now. They range in age from five to nine, and though thats plenty old enough to sign up for the jihad and toddle into an Israeli pizza parlour wearing a suicide-bomb, in most advanced societies armed forces they prefer to use grown-ups.OMG I love Mark Steyn. SO many gems...so little room to cut and paste.....

Thanks for the (unX) article and the ping.
Steyn nails it once again. There is nothing to be added.

Mortensen felt obliged to run around telling everyone ... that America is really more like Sauron and the orcs. You may have been speaking somewhat metaphorically, but you nailed it more than you might realize. I drove by "Camp Casey" after our rally last Saturday, and one of the things that stuck with me was some guy (no, probably not Viggo) wearing a t-shirt with HUGE bold letters: "BUSH IS SAURON". I thought at the time how indicative it was of the fantasy universe the left inhabits.

On so many levels, yep.
We went to a Middle Earth festival in Vacaville, CA. It was really neat; but there was this one moron with that same shirt. I considered a remark; decided not to join him in turning the event political. I doubt Tolkien would have agreed. More fundamentally, I think he'd've objected to making any such correlations, either way.
