The Case Against Intelligent Design. The Faith That Dare Not Speak Its Name.

Exactly eighty years after the Scopes "monkey trial" in Dayton, Tennessee, history is about to repeat itself. In a courtroom in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in late September, scientists and creationists will square off about whether and how high school students in Dover, Pennsylvania will learn about biological evolution. One would have assumed that these battles were over, but that is to underestimate the fury (and the ingenuity) of creationists scorned.

The Scopes trial of our day--Kitzmiller, et al v. Dover Area School District et al--began innocuously...

Who will be leaving the Conservative fold over ID in the classrooms?

You expect me to have a list of names and addresses handy?

What swing state will we lose?

I'm not Michael Barrone. How should I know which state? What I do know is that we won several states by very slim margins

The question should be, what states will we pick up and keep because we're promoting a religious slant on science. None, I think.

Otherwise, why care about a Liberals' opinion of you?

I care about swing voters who will empower conservatives. And you apparently don't.

It's important for conservatives to pick their fights wisely. And anti-science is a stupid fight.

It's divided us right here on FR. What do you think it will do among the regular folks? Even splitting off 2-3% from the conservative side will cost us the WH and perhaps the Senate. It ain't worth it.

Provide me with direct knowledge that God does not exist; That He is not the Creator; And that He did not create everything by His spoken Word in the six literal days that He claims He did.

Provide me with direct knowledge that God the Flying Spaghetti Monster does not exist; That He is not the Creator; And that He did not create everything the antipasto by His spoken Word Noodly Appendage in the six literal days that He claims He did.

Why doesn't our money state "IN ZEUS WE TRUST"?

For the same reason it doesn't state "IN JESUS WE TRUST".

Aye, it was pretty horrifying. But thanks to His Noodly Appendages it's gone now ;-)

Early historians Josephus, Suetonius, Tacitus, Pliny and Younger all recorded events of Jesus's life.

Nonsense.

All of them are reporting about trouble caused by the followers of Christ. Not about Jesus himself.
In fact, with the possible exception of Josephus, none of these men had even been born when Jesus breathing.

Pretty much nothing, to tell you the truth. Only the most anally atheistic - probably an extremely tiny minority that is already largely Liberal - would get their drawers in a bunch over presenting ID in classrooms. This whole issue is so silly and blown out of proportion. If I'm having money sucked out of my wallet to have my kids instructed, maybe they should be instructed the way I want them to be? You see, if the whole Crevo crowd, especially the Evo part, could raise as much hell about school vouchers, etc., something might have already been accomplished on that front.

The only reason Liberals like to bring up ID vs Darwinism is because they know that so long as we're trapped in the public schooling box, there's the potential for Conservatives to split themselves over this. Congratulations, you're falling for it. The only solution is to present both sides or get out of the box.

There aren't "two sides" to this issue. You have science (evolution) and pseudo-scientific speculation (ID). Only science should be taught in science class.

Now, when the ID folks actually come up with evidence for their position (instead of trying to tear down evolution, which is not the same thing), then they will have a dog in this hunt.

Hopefully, rationality will prevail among the conservative movers and shakers.

If not, the conservative movement will have to break apart and reform.

Personally, though I won't vote for a DIM, I won't vote for an ignorant, anti-science throwback either.

Who said anything about attacking? Who said anything about fighting?

Perhaps in our generation, a "fight" has been started by those that will not recognize the first 3 chapters of Genesis may be allegorical. That is not a fight I can support, and I have never supported YEC on this forum or any other.

Howver, in many ways the modern YEC movement seeks to counter a perceived trend in science that has only arisen in the last 150 years; a perceived antipathy of science towards religion.

I dream of a time when science threads on this forum don't turn into flame wars. Sadly, this forum is a small reflection of the larger reality in our society - A large number of christians which perceive scientific hostility towards their deepest core values and scientists that wish the snake handlers would shut up and go away.

This should not be. And please, you have made many insightful and perceptive comments on this forum. You are not so obtuse as to not know what I am referring to from both the "science" and "religious" camps.

And how is it you can quote Koukl?

"Never read a single Bible verse."

The dictionary definition for science is not evolution.

Just like the word marriage got perverted so has the word science.

Evolution is "man's" theory, nothing Godly about it and when He decides to pull the feeding plug, tax dollars it will be done.

Y'know, those cites have been brought up more than once but I can't recall any responses to them.

Similar to 4 legged locusts and similar items, but more significant.

Yup. It used to be E Pluribus Unum, all caps. Would have been by screen name, but someone else got there first.

I always liked it because the underlying assumption was that anyone who came here was expected to assimilate to our culture, speak our language as well as they could and be loyal citizens.

Actually, Koukl used to be in charge of the teaching and apologetics ministry at the church I went to. This was prior to him forming Stand to Reason as a full time ministry and returning to Biola to get his PhD.

You can see late in the year and January on the STR web site references to "The Masters Series" of apologetics seminars he puts on at Hope Chapel in Hermosa Beach, CA.

One of the most enjoyable, interesting, and beneficial activities my former church put on.

I am curious as to how you ran across Greg Koukl, that's all. Not swimming to deep or playing dumb, FRiend, just curious.

That would be unconstitutional.

On what basis? In your #67, you implied that local school boards should be able to set whatever curriculum they want.

Evolution, at best, is junk science. It is intellectually dishonest and for any `true' scientist to say otherwise makes that individual an outright liar. It takes more faith to be an evolutionist than to be a creationist. In addition, there are no facts, science or whatever to support evolution.

Apparently, all it takes to be a creationist is a willingness to make assertions without any evidence to back them up.
