The moat running around Gat that was to enforce the siege.

New evidence regarding the bitter end of Gat, the largest and most important Philistine city, was recently unearthed at a dig at Tel Zafit near the Masmia intersection in the Lachish region. According to Kings II (12:18), Gat was conquered by King Hazael of Aram. He intended to capture Jerusalem as well, but King Jehoash of Judah saved the capital while losing treasure taken from the Temple (Kings II 14:14). Findings at the dig support the biblical version of Gat's demise as described in Kings II.

I'm confused. Is this "Gath" the home town of Goliath?
From Wikipedia:Gath (Hebrew: "winepress") was one of the five Philistine city states established in southwestern Philistia. It was the home city of Goliath.
To date, archaeological evidence has not conclusively established the location of this city, which figures prominently in the Books of Samuel. Most archaeologists identify Gath with the current archaeological site of Tel es-Safi (aka Tel Safi).
Tel Safi & Tel Zafit sound like the same place. As does Gat & Gath. Are they?
Sounds like it should be "Gath" to me as well.
Makes sense.
Did they find the ass's jawbone?
And, of course, we all know that the region was renamed Philistia, after the Philistines, by Emperor Hadrian after the second Jewish revolt in 135 AD.
Latinized, that's Palestine.
But, what, not until about 1967, did *any* Arabs claim to be Palestinians.
Over on DU, they did.
(More gently): Perhaps you are confusing Goliath with Samson?
David killed Goliath by plugging him in the head with a rock from a slingshot, then going over and stabbing and beheading him with Goliath's own sword...
Samson killed a large number of men (1000?) with the jawbone of an ass.
Cheers!
****Did they find the ass's jawbone?***
Yes! It is in NW New Mexico attached to my worthless brother-in-law (If you know him he probably owes you money).
LOL!!!
Of course, I'm sorry he's related to you in any way, shape or form.
Fascinating.
But not unexpected. A large number of biblical cities have been discovered, as a historical document, it is almost unrivaled.
This is one of the things that puts me at odds with my Mormon friends. Where are all these cities in America?
Maybe a true concept LDS would show the cities are actually in central and South America. I have heard that at least one of the Pre-Columbian cities had over a million inhabitants.
Now I'm confused, though that isn't much new.
When Saul demanded "100 foreskins of the Phillistines" as dowry from David for his daughter's hand...was it the actual foreskins removed from the Foreskin's member; or was it just 100 "Foreskins"?
Or is it a pun, and 100 Foreskins' foreskins?
"confusing david with goliath?
???? No, I did not, (gently) check your frequencies Kenneth; Victor Mature will kick your ass tonight. Poor DU:(
Please re-read it.
And put down that Troll-B-Gone before someone gets hurt! :-)
Cheers!
Some were larger than any European city for their time. I don't know if any were as large as a million though.
