Air America's foot-dragging on repaying $875,000 borrowed from a beleaguered Boys & Girls Club in The Bronx has nothing to do with a probe of the club's controversial loans, city investigators said yesterday.
Officials at the ultra-liberal radio network have repeatedly said Air America intends to repay the money, but claimed they put those plans on hold because of the city probe.
"We're waiting for directions from the investigators on how to proceed," Air America spokeswoman Jamie Horn said...........
But the Department of Investigation said there is nothing to prevent the radio network from repaying its debt immediately.
"DOI has done nothing and given no instruction preventing payment of money owed to Gloria Wise [Boys & Girls Club]. Any statements to the contrary are inaccurate," said DOI spokesman Keith Schwam.
Martta Rose, a spokeswoman for Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club, said the agency worked out a two-year repayment plan with Air America and expects to begin receiving the first installments next month.
Air America said it will make the first payment in September, "if not sooner."
Meanwhile, it was revealed that the Boys & Girls Club's executive director, Charles Rosen, earned a whopping $229,686 in 2002 the latest year records are available after pocketing an additional $79,960 from one of the club's affiliates.

Oh, sure. This liberal parasite is really worth $310,000 per year of our tax dollars. That sume was paid as of 2002. God knows what he's sucking up now in salary and perks.
But let's not forget (gag) this liberal parasite is sacrificing his life "for the children" out of the goodness of his heart......all for $300,000 per year, plus all he can ripoff, and send offshore.
What a bunch of scam artists these people are. They are forever willing to say they are for their fellow-man, hoping like hell to make a buck on it.
Do they ever do anything with their own money?
These parasites on the public payroll are disgusting.
Well well about time for Stuart Smalley to open up his checkbook or shut his mouth I guess.
Yea, but Rush abused prescription drugs, so, you know, it all evens out.
/sarcasm
These liberal hogs are forever swilling at the public trough.
Cohen, Rosen and th rest of the Gloria Wise Girls and Boys Club parasites were sucking up so much tax money, they were giving it away to Air America, figuring nobody would find out.
God knows how much their other liberal buddies and insiders got on the sly.
This needs to be investigated bigtime.
And probably if the "bank" robbers return the money (over 2 years) the DOI will drop any legal action.
BTW, is this in the NYT? You can be sure if it were the EIB it would be on page one day after day.
Ping
Air America won't likely be around for another two years.
It's sad to say, but the embarrassingly poor ratings and lack of sponsorship won't matter. This bully pulpit will be funded in any way possible to remain operational.

Evan Cohen, a top staffer at the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club in The Bronx, New York got the organization to "lend" nearly $500,000 to the left-wing radio network Air America a move that eventually doomed the youth group. Al Franken says he knows nothing about it.
Now investigations are taking place charging wrongdoing and misuse of local city, state and federal funds. (Surf the several FR threads to get specifics on the wrongdoing.)
Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club which conducts tax-funded so-called educational programs has the generous support of benefactors including the Charles Hayden Foundation, Con Edison, the Butler Foundation, Metropolitan Life, Pinkerton Foundation, Calder Foundation, and New York Community Trust.....which should also be under investigation.
Most recently, a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice allowed the Gloria Wise club to begin a multi-year mentoring program for more than 200 youth by the start of 2003.
The NYC Department of Investigations is also looking into diversion of funds from the Pathways for Youth Boys & Girls Club, an affiliate of the Gloria Wise club.
According to the web site, Pathways has requested $206,872 for its Century Community Learning Centers Program grant award under the No Child Left Behind Act.......President Bush's favored program.
The US Department of Education better be examining that request very carefully.

Thank God for the Patriot Act--now they can find some of the money these thieves embezzled.
Now, as part of the Tax Exempt Compensation Enforcement Project, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) intends to examine non-profit organizations (NPOs), to learn more about the practices nonprofits follow as they fill out Form 990, the main public disclosure documents for non-profits, and whether accounting fraud and tax evasion are taking place, and whether the compensation of specific individuals is excessive and, and whether instances of questionable compensation practices may evade IRS, and US banking laws.
The IRS will examine NPO insider transactions, such as (1) loans, the (2) sale, (3) exchange or (4) leasing of property to non-profit officers and others. In particular, the IRS will look to see how organizations report (5) "excess benefit transactions" on Form 990, and (6) executive pay.
News agencies reported the IRS statement Aug 10, 2004, and that some 2,000 charities will be reviewed under a new IRS enforcement effort to determine whether NPO's are abusing their tax-exempt status. "We are concerned that some charities and private foundations are abusing their tax-exempt status by paying exorbitant compensation to their officers and others," said IRS Commissioner Mark Everson.
The IRS began the new enforcement project at the end of July 2004 and will continue through 2005.
The IRS has received complaints that non-profits are being used to run just about every kind of off-the-books accounting fraud.
Concerns have also been raised that the IRS has been stymied in its efforts to penalize organizations falsified tax documents and official financial instruments to cover-up theft, and the failure of individuals to report stolen money as income.
Nonprofits, institutes, think tanks, authorities, trust, and foundations, have the potential for, and may, in fact, be major money laundering conduits. They wrap themselves in high-sounding causes while perhaps engaging in activities that are fraudulent and benefit insiders at the expense of law-abiding Americans.
Legal fees, a line item in most non-profit accounting reports, are well-used money laundering schemes that evade US taxes and use fraudulent accounting techniques to violate SEC, IRS, US banking and perhaps SEC laws.
Non-profits are used to run just about every kind of fraudulent accounting schemes, some observers say.

Looks like they won't be able to motivate their voters in 2006 like they did last year. He-he.
Oh it was far from even. The Rush story was all over the MSM. I'm guessing that 8 out of 10 people do not know about this Air America story. The ONLY place I've seen this discussed is here on FR.
Undoubtedly, Err American will go belly-up before the debt with interest is ever repaid.
The network appears to have no "mad money" that every business needs to see it through hard times.
Plus, I don't see Al Frankenstein or any of the lefty "stars" of the network's programs offering to go on reduced salary for the sake of keeping their beloved propaganda machine on the air.
The whole cast of characters involved in any way with Err America appears to be more phony and corrupt every day. IMO, it was nothing more than an over-hyped Potemkin Village from the start.
