WASHINGTON John Roberts pledged Tuesday to respect established rulings if confirmed to the Supreme Court, saying judges must recognize that their role is "not to solve society's problems."
With few appeals court rulings by Roberts to go on, lawmakers and special interest groups have been poring over the nominee's writings to try to determine his legal philosophy. Roberts provided some new insight in answers to a lengthy questionnaire from the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will begin considering Roberts' nomination on Sept. 6.
Still, the 84-page disclosure, which was released late Tuesday during Congress' monthlong recess, contained no smoking gun. Some interest groups were immediately critical, calling Roberts' answers unresponsive and "lawyerly."

Were I Judge Roberts, my answer to each and every question would be: "I support the original intent of the Founders" to any question that it would be applicable to.
All other questions would be answered:"Blow it out your @$$"!

The bottom line is that Roberts is telling the truth about his background and his approach to judging cases. Since both his philosophy and his integrity are unknown commodities to the Lib-Dems, they respond with, "What do you think he means by that?"
They assume he's hiding something, because that's exactly what they would do as the nominee. That's called "projecting."

Some interest groups were immediately critical, calling Roberts' answers unresponsive and "lawyerly." In other words, he did not give the answers they wanted and used words they did not understand.
