Focus on the Family Action founder and chairman Dr. James C. Dobson issued the following statement today after learning that Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., had come out strongly in favor of increased federal funding for destructive embryonic stem-cell research:
"It is an understatement to say that the pro-life community is disappointed by Sen. Frist's decision to join efforts to void President Bush's policy limiting the funding of embryonic stem- cell research. Most distressing is that, in making his announcement, Sen. Frist calls himself a defender of the sanctity of human life - even though the research he now advocates results, without exception, in the destruction of human life.
Story Continues Below
"Sen. Frist argues that under the Bush policy, there are insufficient stem-cell lines to maximize what he calls the 'promise' of embryonic stem-cell research. That statement continues the common misconception that embryonic stem cells hold the greatest potential for human healing and therapy. In reality, recently published studies demonstrate that some adult stem cells can form most, if not all, body tissues, just like embryonic cells may be able to do. Furthermore, there will never be a sufficient number of new stem-cell lines to satisfy the sometimes unquenchable thirst for federal money to fund pet projects of researchers. A morally sound line must be drawn at the beginning of this journey into stem-cell research: that no human life is sacrificed for possible or proven scientific gain - period. "The media have already begun speculating that Sen. Frist's announcement today is designed to improve his chances of winning the White House in 2008 should he choose to run. If that is the case, he has gravely miscalculated. To push for the expansion of this suspect and unethical science will be rightly seen by America's values voters as the worst kind of betrayal - choosing politics over principle.
"We urge Sen. Frist to reconsider his position in light of the values he has espoused during his career in public service."
Frisk is a lying hypocrite.
There has been NO hope with embryonic cell research and he KNOWS that. The hope and results have been with ADULT stem cell research and there is NO reason WHY taxpayers should fund ANY of this. Let PRIVATE companies fund their OWN RESEARCH!
STOP TAKING MONEY OUT OF MY POCKET THAT I DO NOT APPROVE OF!
I'm not sure when conservatism started requiring placing freaking cells which are going to be discarded anyway over curing actual human beings of horrible diseases.
But for those of you all into the whole issue, more power to you I guess. Seems kind of fanatical to mainstream America though.
Refer to post number two for a clue!
Maybe Dobson should be speaking out about Islam instead.
Frist wasn't getting any attention as a presidential candidate, so he decided to pull a McCain to get on the front page of the NY Times.
The funny thing about medical research is, you don't really know whether it will work until you PERFORM THE RESEARCH.
Whatever. The FACT is that those of you worked up about the issue are in a small minority of Americans. Most Americans, including many opposed to abortion, think that even the POSSIBILITY of curing dread diseases far outweighs any alleged issues involving morality.
This isn't the abortion issue- it's not people having sex and then killing a fetus as an easy way out. It's using CELLS to try to CURE HORRIBLE DISEASES.
I'd personally be ashamed to argue against it, but that's just me. Seems some in this group are so fanatical they call out Frist for supporting what the vast majority of Americans support.
Stick a fork in him. He's done.
I don't want my tax money going towards the harvesting of unborn babies. Give up YOUR tax money.
In the end, the line that we draw on the argument of individual human life will become the line that is drawn to define individual human rights.
Frist ain't no conservative. Frist ain't no Repubican. He is an United States Senator. And if someone is not treacherous upon entering the Senate, give them a couple of years and they will be. The Mississippi cheerleader Lott felt that the Senate the sings together stays together. Will Jeffords proved him wrong. While Kennedy and Byrd are embarrassments to the human race, most of the Republicans are a major embarrassment to conservatives. Orrin Hatch always name dropping Teddy Kennedy and trying to talk tough about Janet Reno when she was more of a man than he will ever be. Dole, Lott, Frist, and Hatch follow a pattern. Weak, hand wringing, shrill and always to quick to give in and cut the deal to keep the peace and placate the MSM shile ignoring the conservatives they profess to represent.
Amen!
A president needs to be able to lead. Frist shows no such qualities. Case closed.
And the libs don't want their tax money to support the war or the military etc. So what? Get over it. Taxpayers never have had the option to select and pay only for government programs they agree with.
It is my right to let my voice be heard that I do not want the federal goverment involved in fetal stem cell research. Maybe this isn't a moral quandry for you but it is for me. Is it protection of the unborn something you care about? Or do you want the government in the business of harvesting human beings for research? If the answer is yes, perhaps you can fill in for a Matrix movie robot.
Mainstream has been lulled by letting others do their thinking for them. You don't start ripping fully-formed human bodies apart for parts before they are at least declared brain dead or coming out of abortion mills.
I fail to see any fanaticism about this. It is a black/white issue. It raises all sorts of philosophical questions for believers. Why has God allowed this to progress to this point, and is there any hereafter for those tiny little human creations, or we really just a bunch of advanced apes who evolved from primordal soup that just happened by chance and are running the insane asylum?
Yes, they are only going to be discarded anyway, but by opening a further crack in the door will only make it easier to create more for financial incentives, which is being done anyway by the private sector.
I'm disappointed in Frist, but am not surprised. I wonder if he caved in to pressure from the medical establishment. Undoubtedly most of them view life differently than non-medical types who struggle with modern issues. If you are going to be pro-life all the way, you are going to more and more be viewed as a crackpot. Utility and pragmatism rules the day.
Jesus said he could raise up children of Abraham from stones. I doubt that creating life in petrie dishes was what he had in mind. There's a reason why he did not go that route.
Hey dumdum, why don't we start with your "freaking cells which are going to be discarded". Your donation of your eyes, liver, heart, lungs and a few pints of blood can do wonders. Forget your brain though, it's useless.
And it seems that people like you never have the balls to come to my house demanding money at the point of a gun. You always send the government.
"And the libs don't want their tax money to support the war or the military etc. So what? Get over it. Taxpayers never have had the option to select and pay only for government programs they agree with."
Well said.
