U.S. Army to Vacate 13 Bases in Germany
BERLIN - The U.S. Army will pull out of 13 bases in southern Germany as part of a repositioning of American forces around the world, its European headquarters said Friday.
The 11 bases in and around the Bavarian city of Wuerzburg will be handed over to the German government by September 2007, a statement from the Army's European headquarters in Heidelberg said. Two more bases near Wuerzburg will be closed and handed over in subsequent years.
The closures are part of plans to return the headquarters of the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division to the United States next year and relocate other units.
The U.S. Department of Defense said the changes will affect about 6,100 soldiers; 11,000 family members; 1,000 Army civilian employees; and 1,000 civilians employed locally.
The United States is withdrawing forces that were based in Western Europe to confront the Soviet Union during the Cold War, bringing many units home and opening smaller, more flexible bases to respond to new threats, including international terrorism.
And Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria..........
Does anyone know how many bases there are now in Germany?
Poland would love to have them.
Britain would as well. The French?
Don't forget Japan.
Some German cities are going to hurt.
More unemployment for Germany beside all of the indirect and indirect costs to maintain those troops there.
Talk about a quagmire. The Truman Quagmire in Germany has lasted close to 60 years.
US forces should not be deployed around the world as a reward to those who support our policies.
They are not needed in Germany, and should not be there.
that's some list. We still have a ways to go.
Coincidentally enough, the site of the only permanent German armed forces base outside Germany itself! Du Leiber Gott!
Can you say vieques?
You geermans lamblast the U.S. and its military well now you guys can quit complaining and start paying you own way on defense. And you can do so without U.S. military and associates. Not a second too soon.
What is you unemployment at this juncture in history. Hope this helps you ungreatful buttheads.
Anyone here ever serve at Ray Barracks in Friedburg Germany?
Well, unfortunately, the people living in the nearby towns are not the anti-American scum. It´s the leftists, who will welcome the US pullout just like you. And they won´t miss American nor do they have a clue what Germany needs to do in matters of security.
ZING!
