I'll start...

I like the sidebar - I like seeing the titles of Breaking News, and other news, when I check My Comments. What I DON'T like is those annoying polls at the top of the sidebar! I don't like polls; I don't particularly like to vote in them, so I don't like having to check one of the little squares just to move the *latest* one to the bottom of the sidebar. Whether we have Opinion Polls on the sidebar or not should be an option *we* can choose in our Preferences. At least I think so. :(

This thread will run for two days, so go ahead; it's your turn...get on *your* soapbox! (but do watch your language!)

A new young monk arrives at the monastery. He is assigned to help the other monks in copying the old canons and laws of the church by hand.

He notices, however, that all of the monks are copying from copies, not from the original manuscript.

So, the new monk goes to the head abbot to question this, pointing out that if someone made even a small error in the first copy, it would never be picked up. In fact, that error would be continued in all of the subsequent copies. The head monk, says, "We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son."

So, he goes down into the dark caves underneath the monastery where the original manuscript is held as archives in a locked vault that hasn't been opened for hundreds of years.

Hours go by and nobody sees the old abbot. So, the young monk gets worried and goes downstairs to look for him. He sees him banging his head against the wall, and wailing "We forgot the "R", We forgot the "R".

His forehead is all bloody and bruised and he is crying uncontrollably.

The young monk asks the old abbot, "What's wrong, father?" With a choking voice, the old abbot replies...

"The word is celebrate!" "The word is celebrate!"

Your post speaks of the terrible sacrifices made by those brave souls who survived the Korean War, and by those who didn't. Many of us will never know the hardships that some of our best people experienced first hand in the several wars this country has fought.

Although a Vietnam era vet, I never saw combat, but as an infantry company commander and battalion executive officer, I oversaw the training of many young men who were called. I can only look back and hope that I did my job well--for the sake of the men who went.

Those who have fought honor themselves and this nation. It is not too much to ask that we honor them by remembering what they did and by expressing our sincere gratitude.

That's true. I don't remember being so worried about stuff like kids are today. I guess the terrorists did do that.

But, it was interesting to talk to my son about his best memories--and they were the good things, too.....but for his generation (genX).

I live in the midwest & I am hearing more & more Spainish spoken while I am shopping, & it isn't always just at WalMart. I started eating at a Mexican fast-food restaurant named "Chipolte" about a year ago. They always had Spainish speaking employees on the serving line & in their kitchen. But lately some of their customers are Spainish speaking and they have all driven much better cars than I drive! (That may not being saying much, since I drive an '02 Saturn SL.)

I always want to yell out "SPEAK ENGLISH!", but I am always by myself and they are not and I don't want to be followed to my car when I'm done shopping.

At my job I sometimes have people come up to me and say, "speak Spainish?". I want to respond, "speak English?"

That reminds me that my 4th grade teacher, Miss Bessie Reeves, was outstanding!

Not only did she have her own piano in the room and played it and had us sing a lot, but she often had little games for us - for example, looking up words in our dictionaries, and a prize for the first to find it...or a country on a geography map.

The most common prizes were trays of cookies or spice drops with a toothpick inserted...to this day, I love spice drops, usually the winner by a mile..:))

I might point out that nylons were not made of the synthetic nylon until WWII, when the latter was designed for parachutes.
They were either rayon or cotton lisle (the latter what we had in the Marine Corps with our uniforms - and those horrible green and white striped seersucker summer uniforms that had to be hand starched and ironed until the skirt quite literally stood up by itself - and wrinkled before you took two steps in it..:( ).

The "two stockings" were held up by garters or tabs on girdles - and had seams in the back that you had to constantly check to see if they were straight!

Okay - as a child, plastics hadn't been invented/used either, and our bath toys were either rubber or celluloid..:))
Our skates were attached to our shoes, with a key to tighten them to fit snugly...

[Incidentally, I do remember that as late as 1972, gas in Florida was just 25 cents a gallon, with complete service.]
