Adding "ICE" To Your Phone Directory Could Help Your Families In Emergencies (Announcement/Vanity)
July 24, 2005

Posted on 07/24/2005 4:55:10 PM PDT by CitizenM

I am offering this because I think it is a wonderful suggestion considering the problems we face in the world today. This idea evidently originated in England recently. I received it from a friend of mine in Canada.

I hope this can remain in the sidebar list for a while until many have had the chance to see it and, hopefully, put it into practice.

We don't often stop to think how hard it is for emergency workers to find a way to contact people on behalf of injured persons when treating them for emergencies.

Almost everyone carries a cell phone today, or has some phone numbers listed in their wallet or purse. This idea just might make things a lot easier, and would certainly help worried families get notifications earlier if necessary.

Following the disaster in London . . . East Anglican Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency ( ICE )" campaign. The idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your cell/mobile phone address book, or any device you carry information in, (PDA's etc.) and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". (Make it a separate listing from the one you also have under that person’s name.)

Don't forget to program that cell phone your children carry, or put this "ICE" number in their backpack somewhere. You could even put the same reference to the "ICE" number in your car glove box.

For more than one contact name ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.

In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who you want immediately alerted to any emergency. They won't have to wonder which person to call anymore and will be able to contact them.

It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do. And please pass this idea along to your loved ones and families. It just might be the best thing you did for everyone.

Please excuse if this was posted before. I did not see it listed anywhere, and I believe this is a new idea.

Even if the idea has been around a while, it sure makes a whole lot of sense to me to pass it along again.

My husband's ID on my cell phone is now ICE! I agree it's a great idea and I hope it catches on.

Sounds like a waste of time. Unless your ICE is a doctor or a mortician who cares?

Got it in the cell phone under 'in case of emergency' - not sure how long until ICE comes to California, so I figured that was the easiest to ensure that folks understand it.

Great idea.

And here I thought you meant Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

who cares?

You're kidding, right? Since you have only been a member here for 14 days, I have to assume you were trying to be funny.

I would think most people would like to have their loved ones notified in case of emergency. But for you, we'll just call the morgue and be done with it.

I think it is a silly idea and am not going to put any ICE in my cell phone. You do as you like.

You must have a problem with your screen. I have been here a lot longer than 14 days.

The ICE number WOULD be someone in your immediate family, or whoever you wanted to designate it for. Read the announcement again. For example, if you would want your wife contacted (remember whoever looks at your phone list does not know the people listed there and how they are related) you put the word ICE AND HER PHONE NUMBER with it. You would not take out the listing you already have. Just add a new one under the word ICE.

The emergency staff would know to call that number and know they have reached the person that you designated the one to be contacted - In case of Emergency.

After emergencies the hospital staffers often have a real hard time figuring out who to call on behalf of the injured. This would be a big help to them. Ask someone who works in an ER. I don't see how you couldn't figure that out. But then, again, you thought I was only here 14 days. I offered this as a helpful suggestion. I was not twisting anyone's arm. It was just what I thought would be helpful. If you weren't helped, or didn't care, why bother to post just to be critical???? Grrrr.

I believe Semper was replying to Shawndell Green's comment, not yours.

Oh, and this sounds like a good idea. Scratch that, it IS.

It's a good idea but ICE on my cell will be easy to find, it's listed under "mom".

Oh my, oh my....it is my screen that is goofy. I read your post and I thought you were saying "who cares!" I do humbly, most humbly, apologize. I thought you were flaming me.

Thanks to the other poster I saw I was mistaken. Truthfully I wondered why a Marine would say such a thing. My husband was a Marine for 10 years and then retired from the USCG. So, please accept a big MEA CULPA from me. I am soooo very sorry. CitM

It's no problem. Yes, I was responding to the newbie upthread who said who cares. Hard to believe people wouldn't want their loved ones notified but hey, whatever.

I believe in making the job of emergency personnel easier if I can. I have always carried emergency info on me and in my car for that reason.

BTW, I'm not a Marine. I was in the US Coast Guard. You know, Semper Paratus.

Here's an easier way...

I have my wife listed as:

space, then WIFE

The space puts her alphabetically first, and puts her on top of the list when you open the phone book. I am sure anyone would figure out that she is the one to call... now ICE, I have my doubts.

Yep...that's a good idea too. Glad you are thinking. So many people don't even have their spouse's numbers on their cell. They program in the number under a number "1" or something. Or maybe just a first name is used. For kids a number under "mom/dad" would also be good. Anything we can do to make finding/identifying the right person is a big help to ER/First Responders. Thanks for your idea.
