Vandals are compounding the grief of a Tri-state soldier's family.

Not even 24-hours after Private First Class Tim Hines's wife and family said goodbye at his funeral, American flags that had adorned their Fairfield yard were piled beneath a car and burned....

I would be interested in knowing what their motivations were. Plenty of teens have strong opinions on the war in Iraq. Nearly every high school kid I knew became convinced last year that Kerry had to win because Bush was going to draft them.

Now where did they get THAT idea? Perhaps from the WRONG people who spread around ignorant slander .

I'm sorry, but this makes no difference in my opinion of these weasels. What I've read on this thread is not "ignorant slander" (mind you, I haven't read every single post), but honest opinions expressed by people properly outraged at his horrible incident.

Bad enough that these dorks damaged property--far worse that they made things worse for an already grieving family. How dare they!

Agree with all you say. I don't care if they were 15 or 50. I don't see where the poster has any business demanding apologies from anyone here. As for "insulting conclusions"--the real insult was what those juvenile weasels did to that grieving family. A further insult was the post demanding an apology for Freepers rightly criticizing the incident.

Maybe you need to tell us that these kids had a hard life, a rough upbringing? That would really convince me to be more lenient.

That would work...but make them write it in 10-ft tall letters...in a prairie...using kids' safety scissors...in the middle of summer...without water or bathroom breaks.

Where in your article does it say that these kids weren't "evil, America-hating liberals?" Where does it say that they weren't either liberals or Democrats? I never really believed that there was an organized conspiracy to commit this crime, but I've always suspected that they were influenced by left-wing views on the war and the military. (With some liberals, I wouldn't be surprised by an organized effort to do this kind of thing, but if it were organized, we'd have seen more incidents already.) I asked whether anyone really believed that the kids weren't influenced by these views, and I found that people were split about 50/50 on the question.

I never did any vandalism as a teenager, so I'm not sure what kids are thinking when they do these things. However, I'd guess that there had to be something that influenced these kids to decide that of all the hurtful, stupid things that they could do, burning flags at the home of a wounded or killed veteran was the choice that they'd make. We still don't know what that influence was. I strongly suspect that if these kids had burned the gay pride flags outside the home of a homosexual activist who'd died of AIDS and the media discovered that they were from a fundamentalist Christian family, their family's religious beliefs would have been mentioned numerous times.
