Feinstein could sway Roberts vote: Centrist Democrat a key player on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

WASHINGTON - Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein seems like the center of the ideologically driven Senate Judiciary Committee.

That makes her someone to watch closely in the upcoming Supreme Court confirmation hearing of Judge John Roberts.

"She is not only a swing vote, but she's an influential opinion leader," said Viet Dinh, a former Justice Department official who's now a professor at Georgetown University Law Center. "She is very close to being the middle vote on the Judiciary Committee."

On Monday morning, Roberts is to meet with Feinstein in her Senate office. The courtesy call, part of the White House charm campaign that now accompanies judicial nominations, will not be their first encounter.

In January 2003, California's senior senator broke with some more senior Democrats on the judiciary panel to support Roberts' confirmation as an appellate judge. Nor was this the only time Feinstein has accepted a Republican judicial choice that other Democrats have resisted.

In February 2003, for instance, Feinstein was the only Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee to vote for appellate court nominee Jeffrey Sutton. That prompted protests from disability rights groups, who wanted to block Sutton's ascension to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

"Mr. Sutton is clearly a bright, legally capable and accomplished attorney," Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, the committee's ranking Democrat, said at the time. "Yet, as a lawyer, he has sought out opportunities to attack federal laws and programs designed to guarantee civil rights protections."

Feinstein retorted that Sutton, while controversial, nonetheless "answered every question put to him intelligently, in a fulsome way, and forthrightly."

When Sutton was confirmed in April 2003, Feinstein was one of only two Democrats - out of 47 in the Senate - to support President Bush's nominee. . . .

Centrist? We need to email the Sac Bee and let them know there's a major typo in the headline!

Just what the hell is centrist anyway? Someone who compromises for the sake compromise? That at least would hold true for C0onservatives who begin with a defined principle, for Democrats it means absolutely nothing because they stand for nothing and everything at same time. Centrist, give me a break. Its like a Jackalope.

What on earth are they talking about? If the committee voted straight party lines, Roberts' nomination would make it to the Senate floor. We only have to hope that Specter remains a Republican.

Feinstein IS a centrist. She's firmly in the center of what passes for Liberal thought.

ful·some adj. 1. Offensively flattering or insincere. 2. Offensive to the taste or sensibilities

In what passes for sanity on the left these days, perhaps she is a moderate among democrats, however she is NOT a moderate in the true sense. She is a whacked out lunatic liberal.

I really don't disagree with the centrist designation. She is very far left but at the center of the democRAT party.

What a stupid, stupid, stupid article. Only a California newspaper could refer to Feinstein as a "centrist." She's a hard left Democrat. Helloooo. And her ability to "lead" probably extends to her colleague from California, Barbara ("Box of Rocks") Boxer. Sometimes.

Either Feinstein is going to join the slavering moron wing of the Democrats (think Durbin, Kennedy and Schumer) and knee-jerk vote against Roberts. Or, she will join the solid majority of all Senators and vote for him.

Bottom line: Nothing that Feinstein does, or does not do, will have any material effect on the ultimate confirmation of Roberts. It will only serve to confirm the relative stupidity of Feinstein (compared to other Senators).

HORSESH*T!!!!!

And to prove how centrist she is she and her whore partner(Boxer) would even allow Christopher Cox to be nominated for the 9th Circus Court of Appeals. Otherwise known as COMEDY CENTRAL in judicial circles.

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein seems like the center of the ideologically driven Senate Judiciary Committee.

SB BS. Judiciary Committee is currently comprised of 10 Republicans and 8 Democrats. I can almost guarantee the vote on Roberts will be 10 - 8. Diane the Centrist will be voting the same as Kennedy, Schumer and Turbin. So what is the center of the ideological driven JC? Give me a break.

Feinstein the middle vote? We're all in trouble -- but maybe this is just the view from the land of the fruits and the nuts.

Feinstein, Boxer and Pelosi all live within 100 miles of San Francisco and it's hard to imagine a 'centrist anything' being elected there.  Just because Dianne is the least offensive and most sensible of the three doesn't mean she a centrist. She is on my short list of Democrats I respect. (very short list BTW)
