Man shot was not linked to London terror attacks 23/07/2005 - 17:45:46

The man shot dead by police in south London yesterday is not connected to attempted terror attacks on the capital, Scotland Yard said today.

“For somebody to lose their life in such circumstances is a tragedy and one that the Metropolitan Police Service regrets,” said a spokesman.

The fatal shooting happened in Stockwell at 10am yesterday when armed plain clothes police officers shot a man as he tried to board a train at the underground station.

He had emerged from a nearby house that was under surveillance because of a suspected link to Thursday’s attempted bomb attacks on three Tube trains and a bus.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, was then followed by surveillance officers.

He is thought to have caught a bus to Stockwell Tube station where he was challenged by officers, who told him to stop.

The man, who is believed to be of South American appearance, then bolted down an escalator, according to witnesses.

He apparently tried to get on a train before he was, according to witnesses, shot five times in the head by an officer with an automatic pistol.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair had said yesterday that the shooting was “directly linked” to anti-terror operations.

However, in a statement, Scotland Yard said today: “We believe we now know the identity of the man shot at Stockwell Underground station by police on Friday, July 22, although he is still subject to formal identification.

“We are now satisfied that he was not connected with the incidents of Thursday, July 21, 2005.”

I agree, except they were undercover and not clearly identified as police. That adds a twist to things, eh?

His family are in Brazil, but do seem to be complaining - according to the BBC, the Brazilian foreign minister is currently on his way to London.

Apparently they were operating under the belief that the man was directly connected to the botched bombings the day before. He was wearing a heavily padded coat (which the police thought might have been concealing something) on a hot day and attempted to flee from the police when challenged, so it is not unreasonable that they wouldn't take any chances.

Lesson re-learned: When the cops tell you to stop, it's not a good idea to try to run away.

Same scenerio but actually has a weapon. If he had blown up the train would people have expected the police who were chasing to have shot and stopped him before he could activate?

was in a house that was suspect.

Not quite. The article reads: "He had emerged from a nearby house that was under surveillance..."

Presumably if the police are saying that they are satisfied that he wasn't connected with the bombings, they have the answers to those questions.

"Ireland on line?!"

"Source not known?!"

Sounds like a made-up slam job against the British Police.

Certainly not convincing -- cops would say 'no known connection' if anything -- not that there 'is no connection.'

Not really, when everyone on the danged planet knows we're in an unconventional WAR, not a police action!!!

Wait till after the suitcase nuke blows a city center, or a port, then we'll all see things just a tad differently!!!

On the other hand, let's don't and say we did, already...

If he's Brazilian, is it possible that he only knew Portueguese? (I'm not trying to blame the cops, they were weighing the consequences of shooting versus the possible consequences of NOT shooting) I am just trying to figure out what happened.

It is interesting to read the 2,300 articles on Google News (no, I didn't read them all).

That this was a tragedy no one argues with.

But there seems to be a rapid forgetting of what created this environment--the vaporization of scores of innocent Brits at the hands of Muslim terrorists just 3 weeks ago, and an effort to pull off a repeat performance last week.

With at least 25% of Muslims living in Britain supporting the terrorists, I think the blame for the death of an innocent Brazilian is misplaced: He is a victim of Muslim terrorism.

Last damned thing you want to do is turn a bunch of urban metrosexuals loose with guns! They are likely to panic, and screw up, most of the time.
What we will be forced to listen to now is endless excuses for why some cityboy cop that never touched a gun before last week, went all amok, when he got his little butt scared, for the first damn time!
The Brits are going to need to realize that their sacred civilization ends, just beyond the ends of their noses.
Britain, you have outlawed your hunters, where will you ever find your warriors?
