A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Welcome to TGIF at the Finest!   We hope you've been having as much fun as we have with our essays and/or spotlight on various FReepers. From the beginning, we've been kicking back on Saturdays and Sundays and simply reviewing the features of the week; our weekend threads now start on Friday and continue through Sunday. If you missed seeing any of this week's threads and want to say hello there now, just click on the link for that particular day. If you'd like to drop in and out of this thread today through Sunday, please feel free to do that also. One of us will try to be around to see the welcome mat is still out, put the coffee pot on, and maybe even bring fresh flowers for the table. : )

Hope you have a wonderful weekend, too, Colleen.
Was it Moe who took that beautiful photograph?

It comes from William Spooner's name, right? The English educator.

Ah, that is very sweet, but I know that you all have great families too :-) But we will 'adopt' anyone who wants to be part of the clan :-) Yes, Moe took that photograph. How are you doing?

Just looked up William Spooner..... learn something new everyday :-)
Spoonerism's...I have always loved funny mistatements :-)

"Spooner was an albino, small, with a pink face, poor eyesight, and a head too large for his body. His reputation was that of a genial, kindly, hospitable man.

Spooner seems to have been something of an absent-minded professor. He once invited a faculty member to tea "to welcome our new archaeology Fellow." "But, sir," the man replied, "I am our new archaeology Fellow." "Never mind," Spooner said, "Come all the same."

Spooner has become famous for his "spoonerisms", funny mis-statements that result from the transposition of initial consonants. Few if any of his own spoonerisms were deliberate, and many of those attributed to him are apocryphal. Spooner himself hated the reputation he gained for getting his words muddled."

I had heard of spoonerisms before, but I can't remember exactly what they are off the top of my head. But what you described about William Spooner sounds familiar.

As a N.Y. Yankee fan, I am thinking of Yogiism's

OK, I googled this:

What are Spoonerisms?

Spoonerisms are phrases, sentences, or words in language with swapped sounds. Usually this happens by accident, particularly if you're speaking fast. Come and wook out of the lindow is an example.

More examples:

1. Drain Bamage
2. Bater Wottle
3. Right Facism
4. Sparking Pace
5. Bass Ackwards
6. Chilled Greese
7. Joking Smacket
8. Teepy Slime
9. West Bestern

"How are you doing?"

Must be the Florida roots, but I don't mind summer, able to enjoy the fruits of the Spring labor in the flower beds..:))
Although I've had to scale way back, it still is effective and pleasing.
The medium height zinnias are blooming nicely on either side of the lantata plants in the front bed.

A strange thing, though - in the long raised bed between two large trees, I two years ago planted hostas down the center, perennials appearing again the next year, flanking them with bedding plants that do well in shade - usually red and white begonias.
This year, I merely cleaned the bed.

Every other of the 7 1/2 years we've lived here, in February violets sprang forth and were lovely until May - then died back in the heat.

THIS year, though, I went out to transplant ones that were strewn outside the bed to fill the one end that is 'less lush.'
That done, they all somehow have survived and are still flourishing this year!! No blooms, of course, but the Lord provided cover for the barren areas!

Rev. William Archibald Spooner

Lederer offers these other authentic spoonerisms:

At a naval review Spooner marveled at "this vast display of cattle ships and bruisers."

To a school official's secretary: "Is the bean dizzy?"

Visiting a friend's country cottage: "You have a nosy little cook here."

(Click on the name Lederer to read the article.)

More Yogiisms...

When asked what makes a good manager of a baseball team, he said "A good ball club"

When asked what time it is, he said "What? You mean right now?"

When he was asked if first baseman Don Mattingly had exceeded expectations, Yogi said "I'd say he's done more than that!"

His wife Carmen asked where he would like to be buried, to the reply "Surprise me!"

He was told that he looked cool in his summer suit by the Mayor of New York's wife, and he said "You don't look so hot yourself"

At a dinner in an Italian restaurant, he was asked how many slices should be cut in his pizza, and he replied "You better make it four, I don't think I could eat eight"

Wonderful! Very, very nice :-) I don't know how you do all you do! I worked so hard on my garden, and it is not looking so great right now, maybe all the hot, humid weather...lol, or maybe I don't have a green thumb! My morning glories look pathetic, my moon flowers look pathetic. My cosmos look pathetic. Wave petunia's...they are gone LOL Impatients are doing OK. Planted hostas for the first time this year, they look OK. My snowball plant (pink) is pretty. LOL, harvested about 10 strawberries, yes 10 ...Planted a bleeding heart, it is doing great...

This is not an actual photo of my plant :-)
