These people are idiots. If they actually thought for themselves, they'd realize that someone like Clarence Thomas is the biggest defender of civil liberties out there and should appeal equally to liberals and conservatives. But no, Thomas was appointed by a *gasp* Republican, so that trumps all of his views on issues. Pathetic.

President Bush doesn't really care about where Bin Laden is or about catching him. If he were to catch Bin Laden now it would clearly just be a diversion to distract from Karl Rove's coming indictment, the Downing Street Memo, and the extremist right wing zealot he appointed to the Supreme Court.

the best we could hope for is the hard left Dems embarassing themselves to oppose Clement, she gets through, and then Luttig is appointed to replace Rehnquist, and the Dems are out of political capital to oppose Luttig.
I think the Dems understand this game, and will let Clement sail through easily, and hold their thunder for the Rehnquist replacement (if there is one). They real key then becomes - what will Bush do if he has to replace Rehnquist? does he make a gutsy pick, or does he put Gonzales up there.

I fail to see how what you posted contradicts anything I stated.
The conjoined turnout of voters concerned with the WOT and Judges made the difference. The domestic turnout you cite would be the traditional Republican voting block that votes every election without fail.
That grouping provided a solid majority that saved us from another 2000 by upping the popular votes, and possibly playing critical roles in states like Ohio where increases in minority communities were vital to electoral success.
Certainly G.W.B. made the case himself that a Republican Senate majority was vital to securing Judicial progress, and made a difference in close senatorial campaigns that elsewise could have gone either way.
A few nutballs hae gotten through, but so far most have been good. Of course, their tenure has not been long enough to get a solid feel or for them to really make a change in the judiciary.
Pretty soon they'll be saying that the White House made up Plamegate and forced them to go off the deep end--
in order to divert attention from the Downing Street Memo!
