no way its Luttig.

the best we could hope for is the hard left Dems embarassing themselves to oppose Clement, she gets through, and then Luttig is appointed to replace Rehnquist, and the Dems are out of political capital to oppose Luttig.

I think the Dems understand this game, and will let Clement sail through easily, and hold their thunder for the Rehnquist replacement (if there is one). They real key then becomes - what will Bush do if he has to replace Rehnquist? does he make a gutsy pick, or does he put Gonzales up there.

You could be correct. However, it's fun to second guess the system. Gonzales is a good man, but if it's Clement and Gonzales we wind up with no real conservatives, IMO. My problem w/Gonzales is his wife. She's a bleeding heart Democrat and wives can influence husbands. However, my issue is NOT abortion, but everything else.

I'd like to see RvW overturned only because the Fed Gov has no business in those issues. All the states, sans Utah, will still vote for some form of abortion. However, abortion is NOT strong on this presidents mind, nore mine.
