Laura Ingraham gets buzz cut, still knock-out gorgeous [vanity]

After her second round of chemo, Laura bowed to the inevitable and got a buzz cut and a wig named Wanda. It's typical that the hair loss kicks in about 2 weeks after the first treatment. I know because I had my sixth chemo yesterday.

I'm so jealous that she still is so beautiful without much hair! I'm 48 and reasonably attractive but me without hair is not something anyone would want to see, believe me :-)

You I like!!! What a great attitude.

I have almost the opposite probleem at work though. I have many people say nice, kind supportive things, and I appreciate it all tremendously, but I don't want to get into long discussions about treatment, symptoms, problems, etc. I'm quite private, and it is work time after all. Besides, I can tell who is generally concerned and who is just nosy, and some folks just don't know how to look at me and talk about anything else.

But I've learned a wonderful trick: most people's favorite topic is themselves :-) When I reach the point where I've had enough, I turn the tables. "So John, I heard your car is in the shop again (or your wife's been ill, or your son is doing well in college, or your tomato garden is going nuts). Sometimes the feeling of relief coming from the other person is almost palapble, and suddenly we're off on "normal subjects.

Sometimes I head it off at the pass. My stock answer to "Hi, how are you?" is "Great! What have you been up to?"

I mostly work with guys, so I few weeks after my surgery, I asked a couple of them if they had figured out "which side" yet? You should have seen the blushes, hee hee. I'm mean :-)

Well, I know, it's not really a buzz cut but I'm sure it's still a blow to her, and it will be much shorter and thinner very soon. The hardest thing about losing my hair was dealing with people who tried to minimize the pain of it with platitudes. I warned my nearest and dearest that if they had anything to say besides "that totally sucks", then to keep it to themselves. Lots of people said things like, "it's only hair, what's that compared to your life?", etc. I wanted to hand then the clippers and say, fine, join me then. It really made me mad!

The psycological damage runs very deep.

I got a buzz cut, but it wasn't short enough. I ended up having Mr G shave it for me. All this after I had hair long enough to sit on! I tried a wig, but it itched, and I had friends at church trying to introduce themselves to me. I went with a "night cap". It was soft, lacy, and went with everything.

I found the best way to stop self pity was to take prayer requests. Then I spent my chemo days (6 hours)praying for my friends. No better way to shoot at the devil then to take pity time and turn it to God's glory.

Remember that when you have cancer you will see how everyone else feels about it for themselves, not you. They are often terrified, since they don't know what they would do if they had it. Just remember... its not about you.

God's blessings on you. You will do fine.

My point is not to kick her when she's down --I wish her good health and a great recovery...

If that was was your point...why did you kick her?

My husband has been the source of my strength through all of this, and he offered to cut my hair when the time came. I was taking it very hard. I had very thick reddish-brown shoulder length hair, and my new hobby for several days was lying on the couch, depressed, and pulling out strands until I had an alarming pile on the coffee table. I'd vacuum it up and start a new one.

Finally I decided enough was enough, but I decided to do it myself because I knew how much it would hurt my husband to do it. Not because he cared what I looked like, but becausue he was hurting for me so badly. OK, I admit, I didn't really want him to see me like that either. We're sort of private anyway and don't got to the bathroom in front of each other. He's never seen me cut my toenails or tweeze my eyebrows. So I did the dirty deed alone in the bathroom, first with a sharp pair of sewing scissors, and then with his beard trimmer set to the closest setting. They don't recommend actually shaving because of the chance of cutting yourself and getting an infection.
Lots of women say doing this is empowering. BS!!! It sucked. I spent the next three days crying, then had enough of that crap and never looked back.
BuUT my husband still hasn't seen my bare head and I hope he never will.

BTW, I warned him not even THINK about shaving his head in sympathy. Once, early in our marriage, he, with the bravado and inspiration provided by several too many rum and colas, decided to give himself a long overdo haircut with the beard trimmer. He mangled it so badly he decided the only option was to shave his head. Believe me, he looks worse bald that I do. I cried for days and wouldn't look directly at him for weeks. I told him if I had known he had such a Charlie Brown head, I would have reconsidered marrying him! (not really)

You have Japanese hair?

LOL! NO, just sort of coarse and unmanageable. The treatment made it straight and shiney smooth. Oh well, so is my wig.

Yep! They both knew what buttons to push. I'm fortunate that they never pushed them often.

Good grief, you took pictures of yourself with a mohawk and you think you're too old to learn new tricks? Ha! I will teach you my dear! I'll mail you later.
You're so brave. I was too down to do it when I cut my hair, but when I get a few inches back, I promised my 13 year old she could use temp dye to make it weird colors and spike it.

I don’t care what Hollywood says – most men look really bad when unnaturally bald.
