Columbus City Council Unanimously Votes to Ban Assault Weapons Monday July 11, 7:12 pm ET

COLUMBUS, Ohio, July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- With a unanimous city council vote of six to zero, Columbus joins other Ohio communities in banning assault weapons. Following a series of public hearings, Council members determined the risks to Columbus families increased unacceptably when the U.S. Congress failed to renew the federal law which expired on September 13th, 2004.

The Columbus ordinance bans the possession and transfer of assault weapons while continuing to allow the use of the weapons at licensed shooting ranges and in officially sanctioned competitive shooting events. Individuals who lawfully owned and possessed assault weapons before the ordinance's effective date may keep their weapons but have 90 days to register them with local authorities.

The Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence (OCAGV) provided support for the ordinance and testified in the public hearings. Toby Hoover, Executive Director of OCAGV, congratulated the City on its progressive action to make Columbus a safer place to live and raise families.

Said Hoover, "Assault weapons are semi-automatic guns that are made to spray fire a high volume of bullets. Assault weapons are not hunting guns. They are people killers and we should never forget that we are talking about people, both victims and survivors. These guns are an assault on us all and we congratulate Columbus for regulating them."

Sue Ann Schiff, Executive Director of Legal Community Against Violence (LCAV), agreed: "Assault weapons are designed to kill humans quickly and efficiently. The Columbus ordinance is directed to military-style weapons designed for rapid spray firing, not to standard sporting firearms."

At the request of the chair of the Columbus Public Safety Committee, Michael Mentel, LCAV testified about assault weapons, and provided the Committee with its comprehensive report, Banning Assault Weapons - A Legal Primer for State and Local Action, which includes a model law. The report provides a legal framework for state and local governments interested in banning assault weapons. LCAV has a special interest in assault weapons: it was founded in 1993 following an attack in San Francisco in which a gunman with two assault weapons shot 14 people, killing nine.

More beancounter bullshit thinking criminals will follow "THIS" unconstitutional law........ One more reason to vacation , spend money and buy products in any state other than Ohio, Calipornia, New York, Maryland, Ill'noise etc etc .

I suspect a lawsuit will be filed based on what I read as a ONE SIDED dark of night law passed.

BTW Where is the Spray selector on my AR-15 ? I see safe and fire but "spray" seems to have been left off during the manufacturing process. Do ya think Ohio is getting a better product that willl spray bullets ? I feel sooooo cheated by Colt........

I see they used the old "you don't need an assault weapon for hunting" line when they passed the stupid ban.

I haven't hunted for years. I suppose all that time I spent being cold and wet in the woods while I was in the army cooled my ardor for hunting. I do, however, collect historic military firearms. Most of my collection would no doubt fall into the "assault weapon" category as defined by the city council of Columbus. Does this ban mean that anyone who has a collection of historic military firearms in Columbus is now a criminal?

I would venture to guess that this ban violates the Second Amendment rights of a number of residents of Columbus. Seems like a good lawyer could take the city to court and get the ban overturned.

IT'S NOT ABOUT GUNS, IT'S ABOUT FREEDOM!

Got F and S on this one. In fact, mine must be broken 'cause out to 200 yards she won't shoot outside a 1" grouping no matter how many rounds I toss downrange. I need to find a bigger shooting range and see if maybe she'll "spray" at 500 yards.

Said Hoover, "Assault weapons are semi-automatic guns that are made to spray fire a high volume of bullets.

As G. G. Liddy would say, I am wondering if this guy knows which end of the weapon the round comes out of. I am no firearms expert, so maybe freepers more knowledgeable than me can help me out, but I thought semi-automatic means one round is fired for each pull of the trigger. I thought the "spray fire a high volume of bullets" meant fully automatic.

Progressive societies understand that only trained military troops need assault rifles.

Ordinary citizens are much safer without them.

Yerp. 20" 1x9 twist bull barrel. Cyro'ed. Left hand ejection port. Stainless upper and lower.

She's a tack driver out to 200yrds. Need to step her out further and see if it can hold out further. Looking at a JP single stage to drop the trigger to 4bls. Not very much use for anything tactical unless the SHTF. I'm still drooling over the idea of picking up a Tromix Sledgehammer in .50AE for the whole "urban operator" type thing.

I've been trying the Col Cooper Apollo Quest with a HB Match upper from alexander arms in 6.5 Grendel......key word trying. They have an upper I have just ordered....the 50 Bewolf. Give it a peek for yer big and heavy AR upper calibers.

A co-worker is in the process of picking up a Grendel. I think I'm gonna hold out for the Sledgehammer though. As for the Beowulf, can't shoot those in a DEagle. I wanted at least one hard hitting platform that shot the same caliber. .50AE has good ballistics in both pistol and rifle formats.

Plus, I know where I can get a good set of carbied dies for .50AE.

Hotter yes - More practical NO.

The 10 is a great cartridge. It is a smidge hotter than a 357 and a 357 is hard to beat as a man stopping pistol cartridge. Even the big bore fanatics will allow that. (
