A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Well, not that kind of table...but html tables. Continuing our theme of a few weeks ago, today's thread is devoted to having more fun with tables. If you missed it earlier and need the text for the table templates, please go to the Mission: Possible! thread. There are six different ready-to-copy-and-paste templates there from which to choose!

Your challenge today is to use these templates as a guide and create your own combination by replacing my urls with yours in the examples. Google is your friend. (Search Google Web, not Images, for Background sets:) Some of you are already doing this - it's fun, isn't it?)

Now that you have some templates to work with in setting up your multiple background tables, let's dress up the graphics the same way. A photo can be just placed on a page alone, or you can use tables to make a frame for the photo in a number of ways.

Below, I've posted one photo three ways: first without a frame/border, and then a very basic one, and finally multiple table borders.

Plain..No Border..Nada

I can hardly post a plain graphic on a colored background anymore - it just looks nekkid! Don't you think? :)

Simple Table Border

This has the most basic of all tables; the command could hardly be more simple, and yet it finishes this little gif quite nicely. This is the text for this plain little border:

<center> <table border=4> <tr><td>
<img src="http://d21c.com/billie/logos/billielittlegirl.gif" width=160 height=180 align=middle>
</td></tr></table></center>

Multiple Table Borders

Probably a little too fancy-smancy for this gif, but just wanted to show you more of what you can do with tables and pictures. There are four sets of tables surrounding the picture, and effects can be changed simply by increasing or decreasing the cellpadding and/or border numbers.

When building the tables, start with the outer table first, and work inward. Finish by adding the image.

Text for the above framework:

<center> <table background="http://d21c.com/billie/
backgrounds/goldpatternbg.jpg" cellpadding=4
cellspacing=0 border=14>
<tr><td><center>
<table background="http://d21c.com/billie/
backgrounds/periwinklewatercolorribbon.jpg"
cellpadding=0 border=11>
<tr><td><center>
<table background="http://d21c.com/billie/
backgrounds/periwinklesolidbg.jpg" cellspacing=0
border=3><tr><td><center>
<table cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 border=2>
<tr><td><img src="http://d21c.com/billie/
logos/billielittlegirl.gif" width=160 height=180 align=middle>
</td></tr></table></center>
</td></tr></table></center>
</td></tr></table></center>
</td></tr></table></center>

To create a pleasing set of table backgrounds, you should usually have at least three small background images (they will tile to fill whatever table size you specify):   a pattern of some kind, a coordinated gradient ribbon, and a solid texture for the top/main "palette" to place your text and images on. You can also match your font color to one of those background colors, instead of the standard black, white, red, blue, etc.

Here are a couple of links you might find helpful in making *your* tables pretty and fun!
Gradient Ribbon Colors

HTML Color Codes

*NOTE*:   Another thing you should know is that you can also use the html colors for your backgrounds instead of a background jpeg or gif. Anywhere in the table command where it says <table background="http://rest of the url/filename.jpg" cellpadding=10 border=6>, remove background="http://...../filename.jpg" and replace it with bgcolor=2f4f4f or any of the color codes above, so that it would look like this: <table bgcolor=2f4f4f cellpadding=10 border=6>

The templates and instructions that I've posted are only a small sampling of what can be done using tables, and certainly not the only way. You can find many other ways to make multiple background tables, but hopefully, this will get you started.

* BONUS! *

Here is a very simple example using three backgrounds: a blue gradient, a pink plaid, and a pink rose on pink for the inside. I used the same font color as in the rest of the post. (Font color="2f4f4f")

Below are the html commands (it will be wider than this, and grow longer as you add text and a picture.)

<center>
<table background="http://d21c.com/billie/backgrounds/stormyweatherbg2.jpg" cellpadding=4 cellspacing=0 border=2>
<tr><td><center>
<table background="http://d21c.com/billie/backgrounds/Pinkplaidbg.gif" cellpadding=20 cellspacing=0 border=2>
<tr><td><center>
<table background="http://d21c.com/billie/backgrounds/stormyweatherbg2.jpg" cellpadding=2>
<tr><td><center>
<table background="http://www.d21c.com/billie/backgrounds/pinkrosebg.jpg" width=500 cellpadding=30>
<tr><td>
<center>
<img src="http://d21c.com/billie/backgrounds/PinkplaidRosebar.gif" width=288 height=44>
</center> <font color=2f4f4f>
Delete this whole sentence and put your post here instead. </td></tr></table></center>
</td></tr></table></center>
</td></tr></table></center>
</td></tr></table></center>

Now that you are armed and dangerous, FReepers, go get those templates, go get those backgrounds, and

Finest FRiends,

With FR running at Warp Speed today (HA!), I asked the mods to change the date in the title - so we can run it again tomorrow, and hopefully FR will at least get past the crawling stage. :(

Thanks to those of you who had the patience to post. Will try to answer my pings now.

It almost looks like there is a epidemic of hiccups in FR! LOL! I might try to put one together and save it until tomorrow. Don't want to waste space by double-posting. It was such a wonderful idea and will be fun to do!

Has anyone explained what on earth is going on around here? Sunday just made me "twitch"....and I was afraid it was going completely down today! Nuts, huh?

Thanks for reminding us that as Mary Queen of Scots said--"in my end is my beginning." It is comforting to know that death is only a comma--not a period when one is in the Lord!

How are you today? What kind of home-remodeling projects are you working on now?

Guess what--it only got up to 85* today in Odessa! It's a miracle! LOL! It just feels so wonderful after the heat we have been experiencing! I'm gonna enjoy it while it's here!

Hi everybody. That's a lovely dinner table, Billie. Thanks for the other tables as well, :-)

I feel like having a glass of wine just by looking at the graphic. Cheers!

Speaking of wine...

The policeman signals to an car driver to pull over to the side of the road, due to the fact that he appears to be driving erratically. He says to the driver, "You appear to have been drinking!"

The driver answers, "No sir, I am just tired."

The policeman looks into the car and notices that the driver is a priest! He also notices that there is an empty bottle on the floor. He says to the driver, "What is, or should I say was in this bottle?

The driver answers, "Water!"

The policeman says, "It is not, it's wine!"

The driver looks up to the heavens and says, "Oh Lord, you have done it again!"

I found one more:

“Men are like fine wine. They all start out like grapes, and it's our job to stomp on them and keep them in the dark until they mature into something with which you'd like to have dinner with."

"Women are like fine wine. They all start out fresh, fruity and intoxicating to the mind and then turn full-bodied with age."

Hi, Meg - see how fun it is to do tables. :) Not so much fun today though - wish they would put a message at the top (where they keep adding links to this or that) and give us some sort of explanation or maybe when we might be back up to speed again.

I almost did not get on and then had to wait and wait...enough distraction and frustration to make a "double you" in my message!

I never heard what the problem was..

I Went to Try to Find some Borders and Frames on the Internet, but I am too Dense to Figure Out how to Do it! I Finally Decided to Put the Beautiful Gif you Gave me into your Frame to See how it would Look. It Looks a little Out of Focus, or Something, so I Tried to Fiddle with 2 Numbers in all that Information I Copied and Pasted, but it doesn't Look much Different. I think it's Cute, Sweet (((((((Billie)))))))!

We'll be back again tomorrow, Kitty, so try again. When you look for backgrounds, they will be very small graphics (either .jpg or .gif) But when you give it the BACKGROUND command vs. the IMG SRC command, it keeps repeating itself over and over and over, as big as your table is. It starts in the upper left corner and tiles all the way across, and then starts again just under the first 'row' - it keeps going and going and going :) until you turn the table commands OFF.

It is background graphics that surround that picture I posted - if the picture were larger, then the 'frames' (made with the table commands using background graphics) would just expand as large as the picture is. The reason your kitty is too *fat* is not that she ate too much, but you probably posted the width and height of the graphic *I* posted. Miss Kitty is a different size than my little girl graphic, and your numbers should be whatever actual size the kitty graphic is. Preview a post of your kitty graphic without the width and height and it will be right. But we LIKE to include the width and height in posting our graphics, because the browser will leave the right size space for that graphic to open, and if we're reading, the text won't jump around as those graphics (that *weren't* given width and height) open to the true size. It's a good habit to get into. You can get the figures by right-clicking the photo, select properties, and it gives the size under "Dimensions", as an example: 100 x 120 pixels.

So have I confused you even more? :(
