A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Well, not that kind of table...but html tables. Continuing our theme of a few weeks ago, today's thread is devoted to having more fun with tables. If you missed it earlier and need the text for the table templates, please go to the Mission: Possible! thread. There are six different ready-to-copy-and-paste templates there from which to choose!

Your challenge today is to use these templates as a guide and create your own combination by replacing my urls with yours in the examples. Google is your friend. (Search Google Web, not Images, for Background sets:) Some of you are already doing this - it's fun, isn't it?)

Now that you have some templates to work with in setting up your multiple background tables, let's dress up the graphics the same way. A photo can be just placed on a page alone, or you can use tables to make a frame for the photo in a number of ways.

Below, I've posted one photo three ways: first without a frame/border, and then a very basic one, and finally multiple table borders.

Plain..No Border..Nada

I can hardly post a plain graphic on a colored background anymore - it just looks nekkid! Don't you think? :)

Simple Table Border

This has the most basic of all tables; the command could hardly be more simple, and yet it finishes this little gif quite nicely. This is the text for this plain little border:

<center> <table border=4> <tr><td>
<img src="http://d21c.com/billie/logos/billielittlegirl.gif" width=160 height=180 align=middle>
</td></tr></table></center>

Multiple Table Borders

Probably a little too fancy-smancy for this gif, but just wanted to show you more of what you can do with tables and pictures. There are four sets of tables surrounding the picture, and effects can be changed simply by increasing or decreasing the cellpadding and/or border numbers.

When building the tables, start with the outer table first, and work inward. Finish by adding the image.

Text for the above framework:

<center> <table background="http://d21c.com/billie/
backgrounds/goldpatternbg.jpg" cellpadding=4
cellspacing=0 border=14>
<tr><td><center>
<table background="http://d21c.com/billie/
backgrounds/periwinklewatercolorribbon.jpg"
cellpadding=0 border=11>
<tr><td><center>
<table background="http://d21c.com/billie/
backgrounds/periwinklesolidbg.jpg" cellspacing=0
border=3><tr><td><center>
<table cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 border=2>
<tr><td><img src="http://d21c.com/billie/
logos/billielittlegirl.gif" width=160 height=180 align=middle>
</td></tr></table></center>
</td></tr></table></center>
</td></tr></table></center>
</td></tr></table></center>

To create a pleasing set of table backgrounds, you should usually have at least three small background images (they will tile to fill whatever table size you specify):   a pattern of some kind, a coordinated gradient ribbon, and a solid texture for the top/main "palette" to place your text and images on. You can also match your font color to one of those background colors, instead of the standard black, white, red, blue, etc.

Here are a couple of links you might find helpful in making *your* tables pretty and fun!
Gradient Ribbon Colors

HTML Color Codes

*NOTE*:   Another thing you should know is that you can also use the html colors for your backgrounds instead of a background jpeg or gif. Anywhere in the table command where it says <table background="http://rest of the url/filename.jpg" cellpadding=10 border=6>, remove background="http://...../filename.jpg" and replace it with bgcolor=2f4f4f or any of the color codes above, so that it would look like this: <table bgcolor=2f4f4f cellpadding=10 border=6>

The templates and instructions that I've posted are only a small sampling of what can be done using tables, and certainly not the only way. You can find many other ways to make multiple background tables, but hopefully, this will get you started.

* BONUS! *

Here is a very simple example using three backgrounds: a blue gradient, a pink plaid, and a pink rose on pink for the inside. I used the same font color as in the rest of the post. (Font color="2f4f4f")

Below are the html commands (it will be wider than this, and grow longer as you add text and a picture.)

<center>
<table background="http://d21c.com/billie/backgrounds/stormyweatherbg2.jpg" cellpadding=4 cellspacing=0 border=2>
<tr><td><center>
<table background="http://d21c.com/billie/backgrounds/Pinkplaidbg.gif" cellpadding=20 cellspacing=0 border=2>
<tr><td><center>
<table background="http://d21c.com/billie/backgrounds/stormyweatherbg2.jpg" cellpadding=2>
<tr><td><center>
<table background="http://www.d21c.com/billie/backgrounds/pinkrosebg.jpg" width=500 cellpadding=30>
<tr><td>
<center>
<img src="http://d21c.com/billie/backgrounds/PinkplaidRosebar.gif" width=288 height=44>
</center> <font color=2f4f4f>
Delete this whole sentence and put your post here instead. </td></tr></table></center>
</td></tr></table></center>
</td></tr></table></center>
</td></tr></table></center>

Now that you are armed and dangerous, FReepers, go get those templates, go get those backgrounds, and

To: Gabz; All
Sorry to hear about your unfortunate accident I have had my own fair share of hospital the last few days with dad in since last Friday night.

Just a quick note to say why I have not posted on the thread the last few days. Dad was taken into hospital last Friday with suspected urinary tract infection. Running various tests showed that 2 of his tablets were affecting the liver. He has had an ultrasound to check this out but result inconclusive due to the fact he is constipated hopefully that has cleared today and so he will have another ultrasound and then they can go from there. Hopefully the problem with the liver has been caught before any damage but they need to sort alternative medication for him.

Sorry if most of you already know this but thought would just drop a note to let you know why I have not been around.

All the best
Eleanor

Great! See, that's what I wanted you all to do! Change the urls of the backgrounds in the templates to something of your choosing. Different backgrounds, different looks - even for the framework around the picture!

It is easy once you have everything already written down for you and all you have to do is substitute your own backgrounds.

You are the one who really did all the work,I just swabbed the backgrounds.;)

I am so glad to hear from you. Knew you were having really bad storms there. :(

I hope you know how much I appreciate your compliment about the opening. As you know, I had not planned to do a big fancy one, and then after all that time off last week (thanks to Dolly & Rus for taking care of the weekend, Monday AND Tuesday!), I was just itching to be arty-smarty, fancy-smancy creative! :)

That link you gave has the most fantastic, MOST incredible number of lines and bars and dividers - pretty, cute, sweet, animated, transparent or not! I'm glad you linked it here!

Nice message on that pretty background of Mrs. N's! Really like the the bottom picture, too. (Isn't that one of the places you're going to show Lori and Amy?)

Eleanor.. I do hope things work out well for your dad. Those meds often do more harm than good I'm afraid. When I came her to "help" mom, the docs gave her 6 months to live. And that would have probably been the case had I NOT taken her off all meds. cold turkey. blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. She only now takes over counter pain killer & occasional allergy medicine.

The doc's death sentence was in 1992.

I am NOT suggesting you do this, but I was convinced that all the meds were making her very sick, closing down her systems, & killing her. Pinging Gretchen as she IMHO is about the best holistic natural here on FR that I have come upon.

Well, do know you have A league of friends and prayer warriors here at FRee Republic. Keep us posted.

Billie/ all.. well after being out a couple hours in heat & brutal heat/sunshine watering - all of a sudden within minutes the sky became black & major thunderboomers arrived. Brave Oliver who had been hunting raccoon all day ran between my legs shivering. It is dark out & wind blowing strongly. Hope we get some rain. I did significant watering but a good long soak is needed.

And I may disappear for night (not because I don't love you all to pieces) if the power is cut. it has been almost 2 weeks without a power cut. unheard of. It is normally at least once at day. They have worked very hard to improve the local sub station which is credited with knocking out the entire East coast last year. Major embarrassment for First Energy locally.

Yes Billie that is the Stan Hywet Hall.. golden era residence of the Sieberling Family (Goodyear). Not giving details on public forums for obvious reasons but understand both Amy & Lori will have satellite lap tops so maybe on that day we can post to you.. what fun!!! and yes, perhaps even some instant pix!

Rav if you are back from chasing golf balls in France perhaps you can join us? I know NE Ohio is NOT as exotic as you are used to but hey.. we try!

Thanks for this Eleanor.. I want mom to see all her nice greetings. she had a "pity party" day. only two birthday cards (and one was mine) and no calls. It is tough getting old & neglected I guess... Her friends have either died or moved far away. Family is all having major problems of their own. Mom's body is problematic but her mind is very sharp. I guess that is the way I would want to be rather than the other way around.. a "feel-good" mobile vegetable brain

I guessed that this maybe the case for your mom that she may not have that many cards the same problem as dad in the hospital but thanks to the dosers he now has several messages and other cards in the post.

Better with the picture 'framed', don't you think? As I said, I just can't put one on a background unless it's vignetted or framed some way. :)
