Guns Are Great, Guns Are Good! - (great story! the "old man," two young burglars + 357 Magnum!)
CHRONWATCH.COM ^ | JULY 12, 2005 | MATTHEW HOLMES

Posted on 07/11/2005 9:11:29 PM PDT by CHARLITE

Each night on local newscasts all across the country, we hear this same old story. Well, maybe not quite like this.

Two men broke into the home of Gayle Martin—an elderly Kentucky man who lived alone—on Saturday. The men smashed Martin’s door open and entered the house shortly before 5:00 AM, intent on doing him harm.

Like every other violent news story, this one involves guns, a frantic 911 call, serious injuries, and hospitals. Unlike most others, it also has a moral and a happy ending.

It seems that 79-year old Gayle Martin had himself a 357 Magnum. Author’s note: For you liberals out there, that’s a handgun capable of killing any criminal, child molester, and most large safari animals.

Martin opened fire on the invaders and kept shooting until the wounded men left his home squealing in agony. Then, he called 911, and a search of the area by police resulted in the capture of the two bleeding criminals.

“They were in the house,” Martin explained. “They had just broke in. I didn’t let them get any farther.”

What’s important to note in this story is that Mr. Martin is not some right wing, pistol crazy Ted Nugent disciple (not that there’s anything wrong with that). He’s a quiet self-respecting eighty year-old man, who neighbors called “nice.”

Furthermore, Martin does not live in a community accustomed to crime of any kind. In fact, Martin’s neighbors were baffled by the break-in, calling it “uncommon.”

“I felt safe on this street until now,” one neighbor said. One thing is certain, if Gayle Martin’s neighbors learn from his example, crime in this neighborhood will become even more “uncommon.”

As for the failed burglars, one was listed in serious condition at a Cincinnati hospital. The other was listed in fair condition. Hopefully, they’ll recover well enough to be prosecuted and put in prison, at least long enough to have to explain to their cellmates how the two of them got their butts whipped by a senior citizen.

For all the blathering, spite, and animosity toward guns by liberal weenies in the Democratic Party, intelligent people realize that normal folks face threatening scenarios just like this all the time. Unfortunately, many states have such strict gun control laws that a man like Gayle Martin would be dead today if he lived in the wrong place. Thankfully, Mr. Martin has been around the block long enough to know that whatever strength age takes away, Mr. 357 Magnum can easily compensate for.

This, Dianne Feinstein, is why Americans own guns. And it is precisely why we will not let liberal, anti-gun hacks like Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy, and Chuck Schumer take them away.

If every homeowner owned a gun and knew how to use it, there would be far more stories like Mr. Martin’s, where the innocent person lives to tell their tale. There would be far less crime, fewer families ruined by violent thugs, and a lot more dead and wounded criminals.

Grant County Sheriff Randy Middleton called Mr. Martin lucky. “He’s very lucky. They probably would have killed him.”

But if you ask me, the burglars were the lucky ones. Grandpa Martin could have been packing a 12-gauge.

Moral of the story: Nothing says, “Get out of my house!” quite like a couple barrels of buckshot.

Great story. If everyone owned guns, knew how to use them and were willing to use them, it would make crime virtually non-existent, for one, the criminals would all get shot sooner or later, mostly sooner, limiting their escapades.

Actually, I'm one who doesn't have a gun, and I'm here to tell you that in my own opinion, it's idiotic not to own and know how to operate a weapon! Maybe this story will give me a nudge in the right direction!

Thanks for your remarks! Maybe you will have played a part in saving my life one day!

Just a suggestion, but keep it nearby when he is in town too. If it is always there, you will never have to worry about where it is when things go "bump" in the night. If it is in one place when he is home, and in another place when he is gone, that gives you two things to think about when you wake up from a dead sleep when things go "bump" in the night. If you are dreaming that he is home, and he isn't, you'll instinctively reach for the gun in the wrong spot when you are woken up.

Less than 1/4 mile up the road from me (just three or four houses), several years ago, there was a home invasion in which a young father was murdered in front of his wife and infant son.

The initial theories were mostly that it must have been "a drug-related thing", but they could never tie the homeowner to any drug dealings.

Three or four years later they finally solved the case; the dead man's wallet had turned up (within days of the crime) in a dumpster outside a gym ... they went back and took a look at the people working at the gym, and found the perps. Turned out they had just gone for a ride out in the country looking for somebody to rob.

Just to make this story a little bit more weird, my wife and I were on our way back north on the auto-train three years ago, and found ourselves having breakfast with the father-in-law of the victim. "So you live on Judith Road? *Where* on Judith Road????"

Everyone should read and tell their friends to read John Lott's book "More Guns, Less Crime"

Guns are used defensively more often than offensively in this country. Most guns are not even fired in defensive situations. Just showing a gun to most criminals will make them leave the premises. If they don't, they're nuts or will try and harm you.

You know the old cliche, if someone is breaking into your house and you call the police and order a pizza at the same time, the pizza will arrive before the police. Of course you'd probably be too dead to eat it.

Thanks for your suggestions. We have more than one gun and we both know exactly where 'ours' are all the time. I just keep mine 'closer' when he is gone.

Texas is good about this. If someone breaks in or is trying to break in you can use your gun!

You will never see an anti-gunner post a sign on their house that says THIS IS A GUN FREE HOME.

LOL!

I just checked your home page, and see that you don't have one. I have percieved that you are a female for months, please don't feel obligated to respond to that if you don't want to. Not that you have been female for months, I have thought so for months. I am of the crowd that thinks an armed society is a polite society. I hope that you do get a gun, If you are a female I RECCOMEND A .357 Magnum Smith and Wesson model 65 LS ( Ladysmith) with a 3" barrel, then change the grips to a rubber grip from Hogue or Pachmar or maybe Uncle Mike's. You can begin with .38 Special ammo, then move up to federal Personal Defense ammo in .357 Mag., A lighter recoiling load than other .357 Mag ammo, which is what my wife carries. Please get trained by a pro, then join the NRA. If you are a Guy, everything is still good advice. By the way, the NRA is one of the biggest supporters of Gun supporting politicians, mostly Republicans, but sometimes Dems, depending on their support of the Second Amendment.

Good story. Good for the "old man" for defending his home. We have our home "protected" too. And I never leave home without my S&W tucked nicely in my purse!

On my front door. And when they break in and are looking down the barrel of my 12-Gauge, I smile and say, "I lied!"

A true gun event

Some years ago when I had two kids in college, they were home and had a party with friends at our house. The discussion of these young folks turned to the fact that I am a gun collector.

I came downstairs and one of these kids...an obnoxious little twerp then attending Law school...asked me.."Mr V, what would you do if a person broke into your house and threatened you?"

I respionded, "I would shoot him"! This brat replied, "Well I am here to tell you that you would be arrested and the law would insure punishment". I replied...."No, you don't understand. I would avoid the uncertainties of our legal system entirely, roll the body up in a shower curtain, and dump it out on the interstate after cleaning up."

Even though my son shoots as well as I do (he's 10) and the gals are taught to leave it alone - I'm forced to keep my gun in a gunsafe which takes me 50 seconds to get to and that's my best effort - with no one breaking in my sliding glass doors with a porch chair. With friends over regularly its a liability issue. I hope and pray it doesn't kill one of us!
