BLAST AT CITY TUBE STATION - FOUR BOMB EXPLOSIONS AROUND LONDON
Sky News ^ | July 7, 2005

There has been an explosion at Aldgate East underground station in London, causing the closure of the entire Tube network.

There are also reports that a second incident took place at Edgware Road station in north west London.

The Aldgate East blast was caused by "some kind of power surge", according to Tube infrastructure company Metronet, which is responsible for maintaining the Metropolitan line.

A spokesman said: "We don't know the extent of the problem yet."

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We have just sent some resources out to the scene."

British Transport Police confirmed that there are "walking wounded" and said paramedics have responded to one report of a person classed as "life at risk".

"It's chaos, with people trying to work out what has happened," said a spokesman.

"All we know at the moment is that staff reported a loud bang at 8.49am. No one is sure what caused an explosion, but it is thought it could have been a collision, a power cut, or a power cable problem."

One witness said the packed underground train he was on was 200 metres from Kings Cross when there was a huge flash.

The train stopped and people were using umberellas to smash windows of the trains. Passengers were led out of the train by underground staff.

He added people were milling around Kings Cross covered in soot.

This would go from horrible to absolute nightmare if this were a dirty bomb attack.

If they wanted to do radiological devices, they had the means a while ago. They'll want military-yield devices. These guys are totally bloodthirsty, they want to kill entire cities.

LONDON - Several blasts went off on the London subway and on at least one double-decker bus during the morning rush hour Thursday, police said, injuring riders and prompting officials to shut down the entire underground transport network.

British Home Secretary Charles Clarke said there had been "terrible injuries."

The near simultaneous explosions came a day after London was awarded the 2012 Olympics and as the G-8 summit was getting underway in Scotland. Initial reports blamed a power surge, but officials were not ruling out an intentional attack.

One witness, Darren Hall, said some passengers emerging from an evacuated subway station had soot and blood on their faces. He told BBC TV that he was evacuated along with others near the major King's Cross station and only afterward heard a blast.

Sky News showed a picture of a mangled red bus; police said they suspected a bomb caused the explosion.

Police confirmed an explosion destroyed a double-decker bus at Russell Square in central London, and Dow Jones Newswires reported police reporting explosions on at least two others buses.

A witness at the Russell Square blast said the entire top deck of that bus was destroyed.

"I was on the bus in front and heard an incredible bang, I turned round and half the double decker bus was in the air," Belinda Seabrook told Press Association, the British news agency.

She said the bus was packed with people.

"It was a massive explosion and there were papers and half a bus flying through the air," she said.

There was no immediate official comment from British Prime Minister
Tony Blair, who was hosting the world's most powerful leaders at Gleneagles, Scotland. It was not clear if the G-8 gathering focusing on climate change and aid for Africa — but from which
Iraq has largely been left off the agenda — would have to be postponed.

Police said incidents were reported at the Aldgate station near the Liverpool Street railway terminal, Edgware Road and King's Cross in north London, Old Street in the financial district and Russell Square in central London, near the British Museum.

London Ambulance Service said several vehicles had been dispatched to the area near Liverpool Street station.

"We believe there was some sort of explosion. There are some walking wounded at Aldgate," said a spokesman for City of London police, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"We are not sure of the scale of the incident. Reports are still coming in."

Bradley Anderson, a subway passenger, told Sky News that "there was some kind of explosion or something" as his train reached the Edgware Road station in northeast London.

"Everything went black and we collided into some kind of oncoming train," Anderson said.

I hate them. I hate these people who do things like this. I never used to hate at all. But I hate these people.

Agreed.

And extremists like this require extreme measures.

ANY and ALL options for killing and torturing them are open.

To the Gitmo critics: F**k you.

Fox reporting 90 casualties so far...and the major networks still hesitant to call it terrorism.

Hmmm, must be old gas mains then, we have a problem in Pittsburgh with old water mains. /sarcasm>

Of course it's terrorism. Again, prayers to all.

"Police still investigating explosions as terrorist incident UPDATE"
07.07.2005, 06:44 AM

"LONDON (AFX) - Police officers at Liverpool Street Station told AFX News they are investigating the explosions on the London Underground as a terrorist incident, even though official statements still point to the possibility of a power surge.

A rail union official said there has been at least one explosive device on the underground, according to Sky News.

Police added that they have received reports of 'multiple explosions' in London, according to Scotland Yard, Sky News said.

Union sources report explosions on three separate buses across London.

One explosion happened at Edgware Road and there are suggestions of two other explosions at King's Cross and Aldgate. Union sources said they had been given the information by at least one senior Tube manager.
