WASHINGTON - RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman issued the following statement on the retirement of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor:

“As the first woman ever to serve on the United States Supreme Court, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor shattered the glass ceiling that existed in American jurisprudence. Over the past twenty-four years, her contributions to the nation's highest court will be remembered for her thoughtful, well-reasoned rulings on the difficult issues of the day. Her presence on the Court will never be replaced, but her seat must be filled and President Bush will work to put forth a nominee worthy of succeeding Sandra Day O'Connor. I urge Senate Democrats to look beyond the inevitable protest from far-left special interest groups and approach any nominee with the unbiased evaluation they deserve.”

President Bush arrives to make a statement about the retirement of Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor in the Rose Garden of the White House Friday, July 1, 2005 in Washington. O'Connor, the first woman on the Supreme Court and a swing vote on abortion as well as other contentious issues, announced her retirement Friday. A bruising Senate confirmation struggle loomed as President Bush selects a successor. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

I just wish Ken hadn't felt compelled to start this piece with a bow to political correctness.

Her presence on the Court will never be replaced,

Well that is a comfort

"her contributions to the nation's highest court will be remembered for her thoughtful, well-reasoned rulings on the difficult issues of the day"

I can think of a few that were not so thoughtful or well reasoned.

Our Republic deserves better.

And don't steal the silverware, either.

Personally, I'm glad to see her go. She was anything but a Conservative and with her latest statements about our "Constitution being irrelevant" because of the global world court, she would have proved to be a disaster to America.

I hope Bush appoints a TRUE conservative this time. IF the RATS start pulling their crap, Frist had better go nuclear.

Wonderful statement!

Well, there are a couple of kernels of truth in it, anyway.

To all those who thought Mehlman made remarks too PC, or nice? Whadda ya want? Howie "the scream" Dean?
Sheesh people. He's not going to make the statements we make on FR for a public statement. Y'all get a grip!

I'm aware of what he has to say publicly.

(It must be nice to rise to the level where people have to say nice things about you...even when you are, for the most part, an utter disappointment.)

McCain says the 'RATS' won't filibuster the next Supreme Court nominee. Think he'll end up "eating" those words? And if so, I hope we all get to watch! The most probable place to see this I am sure is the Sean Hannity Show.

A Supreme Court nomination is the number one reason I voted for GWBush. I want a strict "constitutionalist" on the court.

Yes, I think the RATS will filibuster, because that's what RATS do. Obstruct. It's in their nature. As far as McCain goes, he's no better than the RATS are, in fact, now that I think about it, he is a RAT! I hope we don't get to rub his face in it and that we don't have to fight, because they don't filibuster, but if they do, it will be great to see him eat his words.
