The televisions at VFW Post 2500 in Hollywood were tuned to President Bush on Tuesday, but his words weren't getting rapt attention.
-snip
"He's running scared," said Giblock, 63. "His poll numbers are so low, he's got to say something, but the support is gone. It's gone. I don't think there's anybody in here who's behind him."
-snip
Charlie Nessl, 89, who fought in World War II at the battle of Midway: "I don't think we should be there."
Bob Artman, 79, a World War II veteran: "I got a bad taste in my mouth. Every time I read about a guy getting killed, I tear up. I didn't feel this way at the beginning, but now I just don't see an end to it."
Ted Anderson, 73, a Korean War veteran and former police chief in New Jersey: "We still have thousands of troops in the [demilitarized zone] in Korea 50 years after the fact. It's going to be the same thing 50 years from now in Iraq."
-snip
"When you got people who are willing to strap bombs to themselves and blow themselves up, that's a hard war to win," said McDonald, 71, a Korean War vet who voted for the president last year. "I think Bush had the right idea, but now it's turned into a religious war for some people there. And that's the worst kind of war to be in.
"The thing is, Bush is committed, so he's got to stick to his guns. But at some point he's got to come up with a plan to get out of there because we're never going to be able to get rid of 100 percent of the terrorists. He's going to have to pull out, just like Vietnam."

I wonder who is feeding him this information?
This guy has got to be a DUer! Sounds exactly like what they say on their website.
Sorry, their location removes all credibility ... apparently they have drank the liberal Hollywood poison. Sad to see a group of vets, who are in enemy territory, become traitors to their commander in chief so quickly.
Anyway, the country is still behind Iraq, and thank goodness we are NOT represented by VFW post 2500 in Hollywood.
ABCNBCCBS, this is their demographic, and don't forget Bush is going to take away these guys SS too.
I used to think Walter Cronkite was a giant to be admired, until he passed 68 or so and his true personality came out. Feet of clay. Red clay.
No he's not.
The only people who are "running scared" are the liberals and those who believe everything the media says.
Well, and the French, of course.
Who'da thunk?
Of course his support is gone, don't you know the election was rigged......(sarcasm)
Michael Mayo spends most of his life pushing the gay agenda.
This bs appears to be right out of the drugged gay posing as a reporter bs.

Or at least cherry picked the comments that would appear in his column. Obviously he had no use for Veterans who were solidly behind Bush.
"We still have thousands of troops in the [demilitarized zone] in Korea 50 years after the fact. It's going to be the same thing 50 years from now in Iraq."
And your point is, Mr Anderson? Ya know? Have you considered, Better there than here?
Members of our local VFW washed Bill Clinton's feet with their tongues when he strolled into town. They have always remained silent during Dubya's terms. Our local VFW is comprised of enormous numbers of die hard Democrats.
These old farts need to shut up. It is amazing how when you get to be this old you turn so liberal.
The VFW post is in Hollywood, Florida (not California), but your point still stands. Hollywood FL is in Broward County which is still big-time 'Rat Country.
Nothing sadder than an old vet who's lost his nerve.

Actually, Bush's ratings have been down recently. Not quite overwhelmingly, but still it's something to worry about.
