Congrats for President Reagan, a true MAN.

Lauer mentioned that Reagan and Abe Lincoln were both Republicans. Made me think of a hot summer's day in Chicago last summer when, while on the architectural tour, I heard the guide make reference to Lincoln.

A 20's-aged student, part of some school tour group (they each had name tags), said to another "What did she say about Lincoln?"

After he was told the historical (Illinois-related) reference, the student replied "Makes you wonder if we would have a country today if the Republican candidate beat Lincoln for President."

And rightly so!

They don't come much better than The Great Ronald Reagan!

Was there ever any doubt? Ronald Reagan has probably been the one President that has tried to save this country from itself.

The correct answer is President George Washington

Hands down. I can definitely see Reagan as #2, though. Franklin and Edison would be in my top ten, for sure. Babe Ruth, too.

Exactly. Which Discovery Channel do these people watch? The one playing in their paranoid heads, I guess.

Even if Hillary! were named #1 it wouldn't effect my viewing of Discovery channel...oh, well, I never watch it anyway but still... ;)

It is so much fun to watch those teeth-nashing losers. I guess they think that although they don't have Congress, the Presidency, nor most Governorships, they are the majority?

Yep, the majority is just stupid?

Idiots.

You bring up a great point. I wish more people had a chance to study that subject. I went all through primary education and secondary education without even hearing about them. Was working in a lab and waiting for an experiment to peculate, and noticed a book that contained the papers. Fascinating. There is no reason to give the USSC divine powers of interpreting the constitution, the meaning is right there in the papers.

LOL! That's awesome. These students might want to look up the history of the black vote and the Republican party pre-FDR.

Yep. The coolest part to me isn't that this really is the greatest American, but that both Bush AND Reagan out polled Clinton. What that says is things are not as good for Modern Day Democrats as for modern day Republicans and that is really what the people voting wanted to show, IMHO.

Yeah, I was ready to bitch slap Toure (or whatever his name is). I did feel for GW great-great nephew. You could tell he was shocked GW only finished fourth.

Me too.... but that's what happens when the uneducated Oprah crowd hits the phones.

I am glad to see YOU with that opinion---it is the one I have also...

One poster said that most people tend to think of people that have been in their lifetime....which is not the what the "list" is supposed to be, is it?

The simple fact that Dubya and Clinton are even on a list of the top 50 Greatest Americans just proves that our society is a "what have you done for me lately" one, and that most Americans are inherently ignorant of our nations history.

Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton, Lincoln, Madison and Reagan (in no particular order) would be in the top 10...but politicians are not necessarily the only picks for 'greatest americans'.

I find it noticeable that there are NO military (well, except for Washington) on the list...what about Eisenhower? Bradley? Patton? Nimitz? What about leaders in business? Medicine? Law?

That is the real victory, imo.

The poll is mainly a popularity contest.

Republicans/conservatives topped most Dems idols. That bodes well in speakng to who continues to represent the majority of this country.
