Reagan wins!!! Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, George Washington, then Ben Franklin in order.
King #3? Bleh. Man was the commie panther type unhappy King was not #1. :)
A local radio talk show host had it right.
The greatest American was, without doubt, The Unknown Soldier.

Reagan is easily my favorite president from the 20th century. I believe he is actually the only one in that entire 100 years to have understood or cared about the ideals of individual freedom and personal liberty for which our founding fathers created America. And I haven't seen a president in the 21st that seems to understand them either.
Spoken like a truly open-minded liberal. :D
Yeah, it's bizarre. It's like those AFI movie lists--tons of great movies left off, whitebread crap left on. ((The only exception being their recent list of 250 nominees for best movie scores--outstanding list.))
I'll agree with that. And he had a great sense of humor too.
Yeah, and the guy in the King camp said he was throwing his support behind Malcom X.... perhaps a little jokingly, but I caught his drift. You know, it's okay to be a black racist... in fact, the white liberals even encourage this. They can boo Bush, but if anyone booed King, there would have been an incident.
Yeah, it does kinda upset me. How any celeb could be ranked above a President (even one I might disagree with) who served as CinC during a war upsets me.
Honestly, what really upsets me is that Bear Bryant and Hank Williams weren't in the top 100 ;)
It wasn't because Reagan was recent.
"they claim that the economy was "all up" after Carter left office"
The economy was "all up" after Carter left office. Gas prices were up, interest rates were up, unemployment was up, inflation was up. Yep, everything was "up" alright.
I saw that link, but, I usually will not follow a link at DU so I passed it by. Thankyou for your bravery. I guess I will go to it using your link....after I check you out:)))
It's a popularity contest. So, from that perspective, it's nice Reagan and Bush topped Clinton and FDR, and that Washington, Lincoln and even Franklin made the list.
IMO, #1 and #2 can be argued either Lincoln or Washington though. No acceptable substitutes.
The big question, of course, is whether or not Reagan tried to get into a French clothing store 15 minutes after closing and got turned away...
.
'The Mansions of the Lord' Hymn from Randall Wallace's outstanding "WE WERE SOLDIERS" became known as the 'Reagan Recessional' after the country heard it being lovingly sung as his flag-draped coffin was being carried out from his Washington, D.C. funeral last year.

"I have lusted in my heart to be the Greatest American. Now, my fellow Americans....hey, wait! What is that thermostat set at? Are you using air conditioning tonight? That is a waste of energy--turn that thermostat back up to 85 F."
"Yo, Jimmy....don't MAKE me come over there."
I believe the fact that MLK got number three and the father of this nation is number four says somthing about our society.
No argument with Lincoln being number two - as it should be. IMO, Reagan should have been third.
Right on
I would say Lincoln should be number one as he held this nation together, but it is a tossup between Lincoln and George Washington because Lincoln wouldn't have been a figure had Washington not put down the areana.
Reagan was a great president......BUT.....This is evidence of the common citizens' lack of history knowlege.
He should've been above Washington, imho. Those who actually *defined* the nation's founding documents are far more important than the general and first president. At least, blessedly, FDR didn't make the Top 5.
I love RR, but let's get real. George Washington has no match. No one at the time could have done what he did.
No, like I said don't give them the hit. Just think about the Reagan administration, then imagine someone thinking the exact opposite is the truth, and you'll have a good idea.
Yeah, I was ready to bitch slap Toure (or whatever his name is). I did feel for GW great-great nephew. You could tell he was shocked GW only finished fourth.
"Oh, someone is going to pay for this."
