Considering half the (then) country is still angry over Lincoln's war of northern aggression do you *really* think he'd be a winner. What he did may have 'saved' the Union but it was probably illegal and certainly had very disturbing moral implications. The Union became just like the Eagle's Hotel California: you can check in but you can never leave.
It wasn't because Reagan was recent.

Saving the union was saving the constitution. If states had the right to secede the individual freedom promised and practiced in America would have been destroyed by 50 little kingdoms like Europe was and is today.The fact that some of us are still sulking about it but remain in the union is the genius of America. We owe this to Honest ABE. He also gave his life for this principle, sacrificed as a direct result of his preserving America.
