Mexico arrests 9/11 suspect

Mexico arrested Amer Haykel, a British man of Arab extraction, sought by US authorities in connection with the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, the Attorney General's office (PGR) said on Tuesday.

Haykel was arrested in Todo Santos, a town in the northeastern Mexican state of Baja California, officials said.

"The PGR arrested... Haykel, whom US authorities have linked to extremist groups presumably involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York," the office said in a statement.

Officials said Haykel was arrested at the Todo Santos fire department, following "investigative and intelligence work and exchange of information with the US government".

The statement did not explain why Haykel was at the fire station and also failed to include the suspect's age or where his passport was issued, which would confirm his nationality.

"The suspect, who was born in Beirut and speaks fluent Arabic, English, French and Spanish, was turned over to immigration authorities and taken to Mexico City to determine his legal status," the PGR statement said.

On June 15, Pakistani national Arif Ali Durrani was also arrested in Baja California in response to a US warrant on charges he was smuggling anti-aircraft missiles. Durrani was officially repatriated to Pakistan via Los Angeles.

A PGR official said it was "likely" the same system would be used for Haykel, whose repatriation could take place as early as Wednesday.

There have been persistent rumors that Mexico harbors terrorists from Arab extremist groups, but both the foreign ministry and the interior ministry here have always denied them.

Patrick Henry said it well and his words ring true today.

"Shall we gather strength but irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot? Sir, we are not weak if we make a proper use of those means which the God of nature hath placed in our power. The millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us. Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us. The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. Besides, sir, we have no election. If we were base enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged!"

Jeff, if we were to pull the plug, China would fold like a house of cards. IMO We are the engine that drives them. (And that drives me over the edge!)

I agree regarding the border issue. Bush could save the world and be the best President possible, if we get blind-sided by an illegal alien, his rep won't be worth one cubic inch of cow manure.

If the Muslim populace starts conducting suicide bombings here, his continued policy of allowing middle eastern people to immigrate here will do the same thing to him.

I sure wish he'd handle these two issue different, but that's beginning to feel a lot like whizzing upwind.

If this doesn't respond well to what you meant, let me know. I had a hard time translating... Heh heh heh.

The death penalty is the stumbling block. I agree with that. I cannot agree with Mexico on this issue though.

We're talking about someone who helped kill over 3,000 people, and very easily could have killed upwards of 50 to 75,000.

If ever there were a justified reason to exterminate a guilty jerk, this would be it.

I will also say, the idea that life in prison without the possibility of parole is cruel, is absolutely heartless considering what some of these people have done.

Remember the Brits raised holy hell about our detaining their citizens in Gitmo. We repatriated them and they turned the Brits loose.

If we git them we should milk them for everything they know before we turn anyone loose.

I just wonder if they have set up another terror cell in Mexico and planning their attack? They are in a good place for it and it won't be that hard to infiltrate across the border.

OH yeah, remember those articles a few months ago about the stockpile of anti aircraft missiles in Central America, can't remember which country)? Do these guys have some of those weapons? IMO it is real important to get our hands on these guys.

And they can walk over the border into this country anytime they want.

Uhhh...I would put Baja California in the northwestern part of Mexico.

Todos Santos is an internationally known surf destination. At certian times of the year it's crawling with surfers and photographers from US, Australia, UK, SA. I don't know what this means except that TS is not an unknown invisible backwater.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a major effort for impeachment against Bush after an attack on the US......

______________________________________________

I think an attack while Bush is in office is not on the agenda. They can wait until after someone else is POTUS, someone softer.....we're not going anywhere.
