Hillary hit by sex smears in best-seller
By Francis Harris in Washington
(Filed: 22/06/2005)
A muck-raking account of Senator Hillary Clinton's life soared into the American best-seller lists within hours of its release yesterday.
But the book, The Truth About Hillary by a former New York Times journalist, Edward Klein, divided America's Clinton-hating Right. Some prominent figures branded it nasty and counter-productive.
Hillary Clinton Hillary Clinton
Right-wing websites had claimed the book would torpedo Mrs Clinton's widely anticipated candidacy for the presidency in 2008 and it hit number two on the Amazon.com non-fiction list. Publishers have printed 350,000 copies.
The 264-page volume contains a welter of hotly-disputed allegations from an unnamed source about the Clintons' sex life. While not making any concrete allegations about Mrs Clinton's sexuality, it noted that many of her best friends are homosexual and stated that her politics were shaped by a "culture of lesbianism" at Wellesley college which she attended in the 1960s.
This does not stop the author also suggesting she had a heterosexual affair, while at the same time being very largely asexual.
The vein of open dislike running through the book is made plain by Mr Klein's comments on Mrs Clinton's attitude towards her own body, including discussion of whether or not she shaved her legs at college.
A statement from Mrs Clinton's aides said they did not comment on works of fiction, "let alone a book full of blatant and vicious fabrications contrived by someone who writes trash for cash".
The book was also attacked on the Right-wing Fox news network, while a prominent conservative, Craig Shirley, said: "This stuff makes your skin crawl. It could backfire and make Hillary a more sympathetic figure."
John LeBoutillier, a conservative former congressman who now runs a Stop Hillary website, said people should give the book a chance.
"Ed (Klein) is not a member of the 'Right-wing conspiracy'," he said. "There's no evidence or accusations about him playing fast and loose with the truth."
Mr Klein is the author of three bestsellers on the Kennedys, as well as being a former Newsweek assistant managing editor and executive editor of the New York Times magazine.
David Maraniss, assistant editor of The Washington Post, who wrote an acclaimed Clinton biography, said the couple would see the book as part of the conspiracy against them.
But he said of Mrs Clinton: "To the extent that all politicians try to manipulate reality, she tries to manipulate reality. But she is no better and no worse than most male politicians."
Hey, babe, you know what they say about bad publicity better than no publicity?
Upon reading these words and entertaining the visual, my quality of life just nose-dived.
It could backfire and make Hillary a more sympathetic figure.
And we are surprised by this? No. I think not. There is nothing they could write about the Klintons that would surprise me.
She's a communist. What more does one need to know?
I still remember Rush Limbaugh reading excerpts from "The Agenda." It was nothing. These books claim to be anti-Clinton and they lighten our wallets with very little new to say.
Anti-Clinton books are a racket. Ignore them. Go out to dinner instead.
I really, really do not want to read about Hillary's Pap Smears.
THE definitive book on Clinton was The Secret Life of Bill Clinton. The rest have largely been a waste of time.
Kinda like Judicial Watch.
If it is true, is it a "smear"? I think then, it would be called a "fact".
So the truth becomes a "smear". Pretty easy to tell a liberal media link.
No, they did not make that claim. This is Hillary's strategy of creating her own victimhood to generate sympathy. Ed Klein wrote the book as a favor to her campaign.
The only problem is that no one really cares right now. The other problem is that the concept of sordid lesbian love affairs and Hillary are basically inseperable. It's hard to imagine one without the other after observing her behavior in the WH for 8 years.
She is irreperably tainted by these stories and will never shake them.
Whether it's enough to keep her from stealing enough votes in 2008 remains to be seen.
But is it TRUE!!?

2. The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.
