Baldwinsville man's Quran contest called hurtful

Recruit's contest using Quran hinders Army's effort, officer says. Friday, June 17, 2005 By Pam Greene Staff writer

Jon Alvarez is two months away from reporting to military boot camp training, but he has already been flagged by his superiors as a potential troublemaker.

Alvarez, a staunch Republican from Baldwinsville who enlisted in the Army Reserve in April, has gained notoriety for political antics that include hanging a statue depicting the likeness of filmmaker Michael Moore from a noose and accusing those who speak against the military of treason.

Maj. Jeff Wildeboer, operating officer with the Army Reserve 403rd Civil Affairs Battalion in Mattydale, said Thursday he plans to alert commanding officers to Alvarez's latest campaign: a contest called "Create A Pig With The Koran."

On his Web site, www.pabaah.com, Alvarez invites people to create a papier-mache pig using pages of the Quran. Links show how to get a free copy of the Quran and how to make papier-mache.

Alvarez said the contest will illustrate the hypocrisy of Muslim extremists who burn the American flag, "because of the supposed desecration of the Quran," Alvarez said.

"They haven't apologized for burning our flag, yet they expect people to apologize for supposedly desecrating the Quran," he said.

Wildeboer said the contest only serves to be hurtful and stereotype Muslims. The purpose of the battalion is to go overseas and build bridges with Muslims through an understanding of the religion, culture and language, he said. Alvarez's antic is "180 degrees" from the mission of the battalion, he said.

Wildeboer said it is too early to know if Alvarez's stunt will prevent him from being allowed into the reserves. Alvarez hasn't reported for duty yet and no one from the battalion had heard of the contest until Thursday, he said. Wildeboer said he will make sure the commanding officers are informed and the matter will be discussed with Alvarez when he reports for duty in August, he said. Officers will decide what to do about it then, Wildeboer said.

"We don't do stupid things to mock or punish a theology," Wildeboer said. "It shows poor taste."

The local Islamic community has tried unsuccessfully to reach out to Alvarez, said Mohamed Khater, president of the Islamic Society of Central New York.

"There isn't even a point in discussing it with him," Khater said.

This guy is starting off on the wrong foot. He needs to learn how to make himself invisible.

I see where you are coming from SedVictaCatoni. Unfortunately the "nuke-em all" crowd is here in full force and about all you can expect now is a lot of hot-air and chest-thumping about how nothing less than the eradication of 1.3 billion people will save the world.

Reason and practical strategic thinking won't be found here so you might as well leave them to their fun and enjoy some of the more level-headed discussions going on elsewhere on FR.

Eradicate islam, not necessarily people.

Wasn't it Specialist Skippy? As in:

61. If one soldier has a 2nd Lt bar on his uniform, and I have an E-4 on mine It means he outranks me. It does not mean "I have been promoted three more times than you".

Yeah, the original one was, but this guy's a delayed-entry enlistee, so he's Private Skippy.

I agree that we don't want this man's activities associated with the U.S. Army. However, I do think that an argument can be made for flamboyant, public Koran desecration by private citizens.

Of course, some Muslims would go hog wild (heh heh), especially at first. But then there might be a useful public discussion of secular government and private property. I know some say that many or most Muslims are too ignorant and/or insane to appreciate such a discussion. I don't necessarily disagree. But don't we need to find this out?

After all, we're expending blood and treasure in Afghanistan and Iraq on difficult, long-term projects predicated on the assumption that not all Muslims will be filthy, ignorant, blood-thirsty savages for all time. If the Muslims themselves are keen to prove this assumption false, it is better they do so sooner rather than later.

So how about a website dedicated to Koran desecration, 24/7? It could be an interactive thing, where various individuals around the world come up with creative and aesthetically-pleasing Koran desecrations (or just spectacular or gross-out ones) and submit video clips, photos, text descriptions, etc. for posting on the site. You could perhaps have a host; a digitized host, even. Sort of Max Headroom meets Dr. Gene Scott. There could be a counter keeping track of the number of Korans desecrated. And digital video loops continuously played in little windows in the corners showing one Koran after another going into a mechanical shredder, etc. There's really no limit here.

Hey, I like it; but maybe I'm just wrong!

I presume that you "know" that Muslims consider the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Koran to be divinely revealed scriptures.

I am aware of this. I presume YOU know that these same Muslims are under orders to kill any of us who only believe the first two to be divine in origin?

"prophet Jesus."

As I said, they don't respect the Bible. Mad Mo was a child molesting murderer, not a prophet. In his own time he was run out of many cities and towns as a nutball.
