Durbin rebuked on floor of Senate
Washington Times ^ | 6/17/05 | Rowan Scarborough and James G. Lakely

Posted on 06/17/2005 2:44:38 AM PDT by advance_copy

The Senate Armed Services Committee chairman yesterday accused Sen. Richard J. Durbin of insulting American soldiers with a "grievous error in judgment" by comparing U.S. treatment of al Qaeda suspects to the crimes of Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Pol Pot, and demanded that the Senate's No. 2 Democrat apologize.

The rebuke followed a similar rebuke by the commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, who called Mr. Durbin "totally out of line."

Republican lawmakers lined up to condemn the remarks as making the war on terror more dangerous for American troops.

Some were particularly angry about the Al Jazeera Arab-language news station, which had posted Mr. Durbin's Nazi comparison made in a Tuesday night floor speech.

"That's horrible. That's our worst nightmare," said Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, about the posting by the network, which the administration accuses of stirring up anti-Americanism.

In a Tuesday night speech to the Senate, after reading an e-mail from a FBI agent, Mr. Durbin said: "If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime -- Pol Pot or others -- that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This as the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners."

Durban should resign. What he said was anti-American and hateful to our troops who give everything for their country. We must keep the pressure up on the main stream slime media so that they cover the nonsense. Don't let the message get changed from Dick Durban's hateful rhetoric to "We must close Guantanamo". The MSM will try to change the story or drop coverage about Durban. Trent Lott suffered for a kind Birthday greeting of a long-time colleague that was neither wrong nor was it inappropriate. Dick Durban must suffer much more for this like criminal prosecuting for treason, forced resignation from his leadership position and ultimately he must be removed from his seat in Senate.

"Senator Durbin needs to be censured "

IMO, he needs to be tried for treason -- giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

Doing away with the judicial fillibuster is not the "nuclear" option.

It is getting back to following the Constitution.

The "judicial" fillibuster was something that the Democrats dreamed up and the Republicans allowed them to get away with.

The cultivation of a sensibility that makes US Marines = Pol Pot is putting the nation on the path to war at home, for mere political advantage.

It would seem that liberals in congress are trying to incite war and revolution in this country: that is until they get it.

Right now, they should be calling for the resignation of that Dick Durbin. He is treasonous and that is a fact.

You are correct and they [Republicans ]should have stood as one and demanded it.

If Durbin can tolerate animalistic acts against innocent women by a draft-dodger like Clinton, why can't he tolerate hardball interrogation techniques being used on terrorists and enemies by our brave troops in an effort to gain intelligence to protect America?

He supported Clinton at Waco. Attack citizens!!!!

One of them has tenure, the other is just a member of the Illinois democratic party.

Crawford's pathetic attempt to defend Durbin: "why can't we all just get along?"

I don't have any intention of getting along with a traitor.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, New York Democrat, declined to comment, saying she had not heard Mr. Durbin's speech. When a reporter read the passage to her, she declined again.

Coward.

You seek to be C-I-C of our troops but where are you, Senator Clinton, when they are slandered by one of your own?

Members of Congress cannot be impeached.

They can be charged with sedition, arrested, and put in jail by order of the President which is what Abraham Lincoln did to seditious members of congress during the civil war.

I know they can't be impeached. I said so to some other posters. Did you mean this for one of them, perhaps?

No, it was a comment as to the correct action. They can't be impeached but they can be arrested and charged for sedition.

"after reading an e-mail from a FBI agent"

I work for DOE and before I can logon to our network, I have to acknowledge that anything I do is open to scrutiny; even my email is not subject to privacy. If Durgin received this email on any computer provided by the government, someone should simply request the network ops manager provide a copy of the email. He can't really delete it because I'm sure the email is backed up (copied) each evening.
Wouldn't it be rich it this turned out to be another 'forgot to check the source' story.
