'Anchors' in third of alien families
Washington Times ^ | Wednesday, June 15, 2005 | By Stephen Dinan

Nearly one-third of families headed by illegal aliens have children who are U.S. citizens, according to a new study that also found that since the 1990s, more foreigners have entered the U.S. illegally than legally. "The large number of U.S. citizen children born to parents with no legal status highlights one of the thorniest dilemmas in developing policies to deal with the unauthorized population," said Roberto Suro, director of the Pew Hispanic Center, which produced the report based on the 2004 Current Population Survey, a project of the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As Congress and President Bush debate creating a guest-worker program for foreign workers, one key question is whether those workers could bring their families. Mr. Bush has said he supports letting such workers bring their families, but others oppose that because it raises the possibility of so-called "anchor babies," citizen children who are later allowed to petition for legal status for other family members. The president has also called for a broad immigration plan that lets families remain together, which would make it almost impossible to deport illegal aliens who have children who are U.S. citizens. Of 6.3 million illegal alien families in the United States in 2004, 59 percent had no children. Another 24 percent had only U.S. citizen children, 10 percent had children who were not U.S. citizens and another 7 percent had some children who were U.S. citizens and some who were not.

"and neither side answers the most basic questions"

Questions and answers are based on the facts and there are two distinct sets of facts.

One set of facts is available at websites such as VDare, Free Republic, etc.

A second set of facts is available at sites such as Heritage, Pew Hispanic, Americas Policy, and governmental agencies such as the depts of Labor or Justice and Fed Reserve Bank.

It all depends on which set of facts that you use. Or, more importantly, which set of facts are used by those that create policy and legislation.

Also take into account the pressure that illegals place on the healthcare and education systems as well as on public services. This creates economic drawbacks far disproportionate to their share of the population that everyone else has to shoulder by way of premiums and taxes, not to mention the reduced quality of healthcare and education.

Another scam that is going on is that these anchor babies need to be educated and medicated. Schools are funded usually by property taxes. These illegals most usually don't pay property taxes and therefore double burdens on the system.

So, how do we as a society benefit when each illegals' kid costs 10K per year to educate, hospital care, etc etc????

Well, let's look at that: Look at the unemployment rate, and tell me where the people would come from to do these jobs if all these immigrants suddenly up and left.

In the short term it would cause a lot of havoc. In the long term, the basics of economics would apply. The next most cost effective solution would become the most cost effective. For example, when labor is cheaper than automation, the labor solution will be the one used. Remove cheap labor and automation becomes cost effective.

The problem with illegal aliens is that they are a fools bargain. They are cheaper in direct cost (i.e. labor) but place a large indirect cost through social programs, crime, education etc. As long as the indirect costs are in place, the cheap labor is the most cost effective solution available. Remove the indirect costs, and alternative solutions would become cost effective.

The arguments over illegal immigration and the labor pool are skewed because significant factors are always left out and only the obvious costs are included. Economics is a complete system and all costs, whether obvious or hidden must be included to realistically evaluate the effects of a change.

This site is to a bill in congress - H.R.698 which would amend the immigration and nationality act to deny citizenship at birth to anchor babies. Go the that site for the status and sponsors of the bill.

A medic from San Diego told me they bring the near-term women across the border and put them up in motels. Whe she goes into labor, they call 911 - and the rest is history.

One night we had a real quiet night on call, almost no deliveries. Next morning we found out that someone had parked a green van next to entrance to the OB hospital. The illegals would pull up, see the van and think it was "la migra" and take off. The residents and interns considered buying a green van to put out there occasionally to have a quiet night on call....

THE MILITARY IS NOT TRAINED TO REPEL FOREIGN INVASIONS??? What the hell IS it trained for, if not that as a bare minimum!?!

It is trained to provide humanitarian aid, to bring disaster relief, to interfere in other nations' affairs, to guard Germany from the dreaded Soviet invasion, to serve as cannon fodder when the balloon goes up on Korea, and to guard OTHER nations' borders.

None of these are proper missions for the U.S. military as outlined in the Constitution. Repelling foreign invasion IS the ONLY specified mission, yet they're not doing that. It makes me sick.

which is exactly what Cheney said

no it's not.

but enjoy that delusional interpretation.
at 4.5 -9 million a year... you will soon see what I and OTHERS refused to see just five short years ago...

Bush and Cheney are allowing the invasion to continue.
Actually, they support it... and want to legitimize it with 'amnesty' aka 'guest worker program'.

Are we going to require the executive branch to defend our national borders, or let them slack off their constitutional duties... because doing so might be considered an act of war by our 'friendly' neighbors to the south?

Nobody wants to 'kill' anyone.
But the duty of the federal government IS to defend OUR borders, while instituting a policy of LEGAL immigration... not defending the borders of Iraq, against Syrian or Iranian invasion.

as far as gunning down mexicans as they cross the border...
pancho villa was a mexican bandito... we went after his ass with big guns in the hands of our military didn't we now?

I have NO problem with the military being used to repel, by force or threat therof, the mexican and other nationality 'banditos' of our time... who come to steal our jobs, property, benefits... and who break our laws, with impugnity and immunity because of the lacadazical cooperation of our Executive branch of the government... this administration that supports our continued invasion.

Build a wall. Man it with US Army. Start today.

1. Why do we have a law that says that any baby born here is automatically a citizen, even if the parents are illegal immigrants?
2. Why is there no movement to change this law?

Only a third have anchors Something must be wrong in that report

The article breaks it down like this:

Of 6.3 million illegal alien families in the United States in 2004,
Another thread  had the following to say about the costs of educating these children:
While these massive budget deficits cannot be attributed to any single source, the enormous impact of large-scale illegal immigration cannot be ignored. The total K-12 school expenditure for illegal immigrants costs the states nearly $12 billion annually, and when the children born here to illegal aliens are added, the costs more than double to $28.6 billion.

We've killed a whole genertion of young Americans through abortion who otherwise could have done the work.

In addition, we have almost another generation of young people and their families on welfare who should be made to work for what they get.

If we had the will, the work would get done by legal citizens and legal immigrants.

Just my opinion.

Fortunately, we have the highest possible authority on record to answer this question of how the term "jurisdiction" was to be interpreted and applied, the author of the citizenship clause, Sen. Jacob M. Howard (MI) to tell us exactly what it means and its intended scope as he introduced it to the United States Senate in 1866: Mr. HOWARD: I now move to take up House joint resolution No. 127. The motion was agreed to; and the Senate, as in Committee of the Whole, resumed the consideration of the joint resolution (H.R. No. 127) proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States. The first amendment is to section one, declaring that all "persons born in the United States and Subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the States wherein they reside. I do not propose to say anything on that subject except that the question of citizenship has been fully discussed in this body as not to need any further elucidation, in my opinion. This amendment which I have offered is simply declaratory of what I regard as the law of the land already, that every person born within the limits of the United States, and subject to their jurisdiction, is by virtue of natural law and national law a citizen of the United States. This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of persons. It settles the great question of citizenship and removes all doubt as to what persons are or are not citizens of the United States. This has long been a great desideratum in the jurisprudence and legislation of this country.
