That's a great post, bayourod. I see the most realistic approach as being build the walls and lock the doors, but obviously that's a preventative measure, not dealing with those already inside. Of course, if we'd taken the approach you describe since the 80's we might not be in the mess we're in now.

Put me down for a guest worker program like the one we had in World War 2.

Let people come in and work seasonal jobs and then go back home.

I am totally against illegal immigration in any form.

I also do not support citizenship for guest workers and illegals already in this country.

Just because their here illegally dose not give them the right to stay here.

I can see the guest worker plan being approved but any other free give away of citizenship rights will have a hell of a hard time passing if my vote counts for anything.

However, I am sure the ACLU dupes are licking their chops.

Now I remember- marrying an immigrant to earn their citizenship IS illegal.

It's not that easy. You have to prove a long term relationship before they will grant legal status.

On its fifth anniversary, both the Immigration and Naturalization Service and leading politicians hailed the operation. "Operation Gatekeeper has really been an unprecedented success," said US Senator Diane Feinstein, a California Democrat. "What it tells me is it's a myth that the border can't be enforced. It can be enforced."

From one of your own, no less.

So, you see "rod", we caught over 600,000 in 1993. How did we reduce that number?

Since the launch of Operation Gatekeeper, apprehensions in San Diego have dropped from 45 percent to 30 percent of the total Southwest border. At the Imperial Beach station, which covers the first four miles from the ocean eastward and was the busiest border area, apprehensions dropped from 138,185 in FY 1994 (before the start of Gatekeeper) to 25,029 in FY 1997, an 82 percent reduction.

So, what this really means is that enforcement of the border works. But, that bothers you most of all.

Not peacfully, that's why they carry the big guns.

You may view what is going on as a peaceful migration, but I view a foreign government allowing, even promoting, illegal immigration as a hostile act. I am not saying that we need to mow down border crossers, but think of the deterrent our military could provide by weilding a few fully armed HUMVEEs, Strykers, and Apaches.

Hell, the MMP was enough of a deterrent to make the Mexican Gov't re-route the lines of illegals.

No great surprise here. Makes ya wanna hurl how Washington DC Federal government has *intentionally* blown it on illegal immigration. Treated it a one big frigging joke. Anchor babies will one day be voting and making this mess even worse, more chaotic.

It was a success from the standpoint that it significantly reduced border jumpers in that area. But the estimated number that still got through, an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 per year, (454 to 606 per mile), if extrapolated nationwide would still allow over forty million per year to jump the border.

I can't vouch for the accuracy of my numbers. My sources are partially from newspapers and some of those are estimates, such as number of border jumpers not caught. But even if they are off by half, the end conclusion has to be the same.

Operation Gatekeep has been in effect since 1994. Has it reduced the number of illegals in San Diego?

Thanks for taking the time to look at Operation Gatekeeper instead of simply calling me a traitor for raising the point. I would like to have your source to add to my file. Thank you.

No kidding. I sure would like to read your sources for your numbers and your estimates. I believe that you are using every mile of our border, whether it be land or sea entry, in your estimates. If I take 30,000 people/66 miles, I get 454 per mile. BUT, extrapolating that over our LAND border, about 6000 miles (not counting Alaska-Canada border), I get about 2.8 million people. WAY less than 40 million. Still not good, but try to be closer.

As far as Operation Gatekeeper and its successes, I will read any link that you have because I severly doubt ANY data publicized from the Clinton Administration. Just look here for a GLARING example:

1997 US Annual Report

Here is the example:

For fiscal years 1991 and beyond, the excess of Social Security taxes over outlays for Social Security is excluded by law from the deficit calculation. This amount was $52 billion in 1996 and $68 billion in 1997. The Clinton Administration, however, has elected to include the Social Security Trust Fund in the deficit calculation, which has the effect of reducing the reported deficit. Exclusion of the Trust Fund surpluses would increase the reported deficits to $159 billion in 1996 and $91 billion in 1997.

One set of facts is available at websites such as VDare, Free Republic, etc.

I can't believe you just associated FR with that piece of $hit VDare site.

Well, you and I can pretend that illegals can't arrive via water, but that won't stop them. Ask the people in Miami.

It's also the preferred route for drug smuggling because the odds of being caught are less. If you seal the land routes, they will just increase usage of the water routes.

In addition to the people entering by land and sea surface routes, you need to add in the number who fly across in small planes. Another favorite method of drug smugglers, the Texas landscape is littered with unmarked private landing fields and private blacktopped "roads".

And since an estimated 50% of illegals currently in the U.S. originally entered legally as tourists, students, business biz etc... and simply didn't go home after their time expired, factor in another unlimited millions.

Never pass up a chance to hyperbolize when you can simply use common sense.

My sources were:

For the Feinstein quote.

The chart comes from here: Operation Gatekeeper: An Investigation Into Allegations of Fraud and Misconduct (July, 1998)

Which refuted the claims of fraud and inflated apprehension rates.

I don't think you are a traitor. Simply someone who has a stake in propagating illegals. For whatever reason you have it's anethema to good citizenship.

By the way, I will keep pointing out your "Lies of the day" when I come across them.

You simply can't use the same rates for those. It's just plain silly and hyperbolic.

"We have to start somewhere,"

But the place to start may not be on the border. We already catch 1/3rd to 3/4ths of attempted border jumpers. We can never catch 100%. I can't see that our increases in border security has cut down on the total number of illegals at all.

The better way, in my opinion is to address the problems at the local level as needed. If Dallas is happy with the level and conduct of illegals in their city, leave it alone. If FT Worth is unhappy with the impact illegals are having on their city, bring in ICE to bust the employers.

You have to address the demand side of the equation by giving employers all the legal immigrants they need, or by putting them out of business. Killing businesses is like killing the goose that laid the golden egg.
